The Ohio House votes on the 1.808 billion dollar two year budget as part of Gov. DiSalle's tax plan. Lawmakers consider related measures including voting rights for newcomers, a new voting machine, and a shift away from the replacement cost new formula for utility rates.
Washington reports indicate John Foster Dulles, former secretary of state, continues to weaken from cancer and pneumonia. The State Department says he is conscious but sleeping, pain killers control pain, and doctors see little chance to forecast his remaining days as family gathers at his bedside.
A discarded practice shell exploded on a Formosa firing range, killing four boys who were collecting scrap metal. The accident occurred Monday in Taipel Formosa as youths scavenged near the range, authorities said.
Washington AP The annual public housing battle begins in the House with a Wednesday showdown vote. The Democratic backed plan would continue government subsidized construction, opposed by the administration. The measure includes 1 billion for slum elimination urban renewal 400 million for college housing 100 million for elderly housing and 140000 new units of low rent public housing. The Senate passed a bill costing more than both Rains and Eisenhower proposals.
Lions Cheer Club announces Joe Krannitz of 650 Motherwell Ave as this week’s member. He has been a recluse for months due to illness and the club hopes friends will send him cards. Last week’s honoree, Mrs. Bert Bell of 309 N Mulberry St, thanked the club for flowers and calls.
Mrs. Harry S. Truman, 74, rallied from surgery to remove a breast tumor at Research Hospital. The two hour forty five minute operation occurred Monday morning and a biopsy will confirm malignancy in two to three days. She called to say she was grandmother for the second time after their daughter gave birth in New York.
Johns-Manville Corp will construct a multi million dollar vinyl and asphalt floor tile plant on a 57 acre site five miles north of Chillicothe Ohio at Hope town beside the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and the Scioto River. Construction begins at once with completion planned for next summer. About 125 workers will be employed with an estimated annual payroll of 625000 dollars.
A Zanesville firm, O. J. Paul Construction Co., is the apparent low bidder for general construction on a new school wing and recreational activity building at the Lancaster Boys Industrial School. Paul’s bid is 138,171 dollars, compared with a state estimate of 118,256.
Secretary of Defense Neil H. McElroy said he will stay on indefinitely after a White House meeting with President Eisenhower and Deputy Secretary-designate Thomas Gates Jr. Gates, replacing the late Donald A. Quarles, will join the cabinet as deputy secretary.
Logan board approved two new teachers for 1959-60 and accepted five resignations. Replacements include Richard Buntz to teach junior high and Helen Acker as elementary teacher. Salary increases were granted to five principals. A lighting contract for the football field was tentatively approved. The 1959-60 year opens Sept. 2 with faculty meetings Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Swimming pool hours and prices were set for Memorial Day to Sept. 1.
Warm humid conditions with scattered thundershowers continued through Wednesday in Hocking County. A noon temperature of 85 followed a 52 degree low last night, with Monday’s high near 80. County agricultural agent Don Young noted light frost damage to gardens and clover, while one fruit grower reported no orchard damage.
A flood up to ten feet deep struck St. Joseph on Monday night after a northwest cloudburst. One man drowned, William M. Thomas, found four blocks from his car. Four inches of rain in one hour caused extensive property damage and a dramatic rescue at Green Hills supermarket where eight clerks fled to the roof.
The United States warned the Soviet Union that President Eisenhower would boycott a summit if Khrushchev revived a May 27 deadline on West Berlin. Christian Herter told Andrei Gromyko the U.S. would reject any summit under duress and noted Gromyko floated neutral troops or a split Germany as possible Berlin settlement options.
A statewide manhunt near Richmondale Ross County continues for two 23 year old escapees from a Delaware workhouse. Robert Martin and Clarence Garber are believed armed and fled after abandoning a car stolen in West Virginia. Ten patrol officers and a patrol plane aided the search. all but three were stood down at noon.
Laurelville High School honors Sharon Allen first in class with role as valedictorian and editor of the school paper. Judy Swackhammer serves as salutatorian and class treasurer with broad involvement in band and yearbook. Union Furnace names Charlotte Shaw as valedictorian and Karen Armstrong as salutatorian, noting their roles in NHS, student council, band, yearbook, and church activities.
