An aerial tour of Hocking County shows strong soil conservation efforts, including contour farming, ponds, and tree planting, alongside eroded hillsides and abandoned strip mining, with residents invited to view the county from the air on August 2 to learn about local conservation work led by the Hocking Soil Conservation District.
An auto accident on Route 328 at 10 30 PM yesterday three miles south of Union Furnace was investigated by Sheriff's Deputy Hudson McFann. Vehicles driven by Donald Eggleston 22 New Plymouth Route 1 and Baxter Conley 35 New Plymouth Route 1 were involved. Front and both sides of the Eggleston car and left rear of the Conley auto were damaged. No injuries were reported.
Richard J. Sniffra, 13, riding on the frame as a passenger, was killed when the bicycle struck an open car door and he was hurled into the path of a truck. The accident occurred yesterday in Cleveland.
A House bill would raise salaries for all Hocking County elected officials beginning with new terms. It would boost the common pleas judge state share from 3,000 to 4,000, total 6,280 with county contributions. County shares scale by population and several county roles would see new set amounts.
County treasurer Ralph W Moorhead reports that starting Monday May 21 all prepaid tax receipt sales will carry a two percent discount instead of three percent per amended Rule No 68 issued by the state tax commissioner. Roger W Tracy state treasurer confirms the change.
The nation marks Armed Forces Day with open houses and displays as B 36 bombers fly over 250 cities from coast to coast. President Truman and other leaders urge unity while troops, navy ships, and air power showcase readiness in Korea and at home.
Britain offered to send a high level diplomatic mission to Iran to settle the Anglo Iranian Oil Company dispute over nationalization. Iranian Premier Mossadegh refused to receive the British envoy, signaling a cool reception. The British note called for negotiations to amend the 1933 treaty and warned of International Court of Justice recourse if Iran persists.
Large iron ore shipments move through Logan en route to Jackson County with about 200 carloads this week. A record 105 cars, pulled by two steam engines, passed yesterday, and two diesel locomotives pulled 95 cars earlier in the week. Cars split into two loads beyond Starr Hill after Union Furnace.
Max Stacy announced that the city will shut off water on Front Street from Gallagher Avenue to Short Street for a fire hydrant repair. Water will be off a few minutes Tuesday morning starting at 7 30 PM unless unexpected trouble develops.
Massillon Ohio reports that General Jacob S. Coxey died aged 97. The reformer led Coxey's Army in 1894 campaigning for easy money and a massive road program to ease 1893 panic distress. Though the march failed, Coxey remained active in reform efforts and served as Massillon mayor in 1931.
The Lancaster Eagle Gazette joined the Logan Daily News on the front page calling for Rep. Walter E. Brehm resign from Ohio's 11th district after he was denied a new trial in Washington on a conviction for receiving illegal campaign contributions.
Benjamin Myers, 22, of Rockbridge, was fined 50 dollars and costs and sentenced to 60 days in Hocking County court on intoxication and disorderly conduct and fighting and resisting arrest. Thirty days were suspended after he allegedly struck Deputy McFann during escort to jail and tried to flee after tripping over a cement wall.
Washington reports the Post Office Department will raise parcel post rates by an average 25 percent effective October 1. The announcement comes amid ongoing postal service cost adjustments and service discussions.
A 23 year old one armed insurance salesman George Phillips pleaded innocent to a first degree murder charge in the April 25 bludgeon slaying of Mrs Ruth Alter. Sheriff Ralph J Paul filed the formal charge after Phillips underwent a three hour lie detector test and was questioned by police and detectives since Wednesday. Human blood stains found on trousers at Phillips' home sparked the investigation as discrepancies in his statements emerged.
In Tokyo on May 19 the U S Second Division halted brutal Red assaults on the central Korean front aided by French and Dutch units. Officers reported estimated Red losses at over 10,000 as South Korean lines buckled briefly but held. Col John C Coughlin recalled regaining a perimeter after 36 hours trapped, noting captured Reds claimed orders to destroy the Second Division and avenge defeats at Chipyong and Wonju.
Congressman Walter E. Brehm vows to appeal his campaign contribution conviction after a new trial motion was denied. A resolution in the Ohio House seeks his resignation and possible unseating, tied to a redistricting plan that would abolish his 11th district.
