Council last night passed legislation to hire engineers to design a filtration plant for the city waterworks. A $500 engineering cost appropriation was approved, with the Service Director Loomis to select the engineers. An additional $15,000 construction appropriation was delayed for further review as engineers draft plans.
Basque defenders retreat along the Amorebieta highway eight miles east of Bilbao as Gen. Moia tries to split the De Callo line. Advices say militiamen establish a new front behind Amorebietz ruins while the main force falls back toward the city gates to join reserves.
May 19 AP report says Lake Shore Electric Co. receiver announced discontinuance of interurban freight service between Cleveland and Toledo. About 30 pickets were at Avorr Lake village station yesterday, and the move affects more than 100 employees after freight handlers failed to report for work.
In South Hardwinton Connecticut on May 19 AP report says J Henry Roraback head of the Republican state committee was shot to death outside his summer home. Medical Examiner W B Hansett of New Haven gave a verdict of suicide or self inflicted death as the afternoon light faded.
Officials of the United Automobile Workers announce plans to file a complaint with the national labor relations board over distribution of Ford cards displaying Henry Ford views on unions to workers in his plants. The UAW seeks to organize Ford Motor Company, and photos show workers reading the card during lunch.
Hocking County commissioners and the state highway department are examining the use of local limestone for county and state roads. A meeting at the courthouse included county officials, highway officials, and WPA staff. State crews led by Orla Wolfe tested locations, including the Whitecraft farm near Smith's Chapel, with quarrying planned using WPA labor. County roads have relied on wash gravel, but this plan could mark the first use of native Hocking County limestone for road work.
Ruth Baumgardner 22 from Ohio Wesleyan University dormitory vanished May 5 and was located by Boston police on May 19. Columbus authorities were advised while Boston deputy John Anderson said she would be held until Columbus police direct actions. In Pittsburgh on May 19, Martin J. Sullivan, a 13 year veteran ex patrolman, faced a murder trial after being jeered by former neighbors. The state opened with testimony linking Sullivan to the killings of six people in Duquesne, including Mrs Laura Bacon, and wounding a man. Prosecutor Chauncey Prager said Sullivan invited a 10 year old girl to his home and implied others were present, prompting neighbor reports and a plan he allegedly made when facing jail.
In Monts France May 19 AP report says Dame Vraseld will become Her Royal Highness on June 3 when the Duke of Windsor marries Wallis Warfield. Prosecutor Carcassonne cleared the way with special permissions for a civil ceremony at Chateau de Cande. Invitations to a select few are awaited as the couple remains indoors due to weather.
The commonwealth began to reconstruct the death of Frank C. Monaghan for the jury in the murder trial of James A. Reilly Fayette County district attorney. Rapid progress on the Farmers and Merchants Bank renovation at Main and Market Streets. William Loomis is contractor as crews excavate a new concrete foundation and remove front walls to install a new entrance. The building will be brick veneered to match the Arcade Building, with interior redecorations and basement remodeling for the accounting department.
Word from Columbus reports Dr. E. E. Campbell former Logan physician was awarded the Fellowship in the American College of Physicians at a St. Louis meeting. The honor is among medicine’s highest. Dr. Campbell, a Logan native, has built his medical career in Columbus.

A Saint Bernard from the Mount St Bernard monastery killed ten year old Marianne Bremond during a skiing trip from Chesseres Switzerland. Her father and two sisters witnessed the attack as monks and the hospice monks treated the girl. The monastery dogs often greet travelers.
