The 84 year old poet Robert Frost spoke in Redlands offering views on life art and religion. He compared poets to baseball pitchers noting the tough intervals and said beginners face market trial. He joked about forgiveness and his own work while describing his cautious political stance.
In Phoenix a ramshackle wooden apartment fire claimed six children ages 5 months to 6 years. Alfred John Stafford, 9, escaped. The mothers left the youngsters with Stafford. the boy says a kerosene lantern tipped over. Firefighters confined the blaze to one apartment. bodies found huddled in a bedroom corner.
The Agriculture Department reports the average electrified farm increased power usage by 142 percent over ten years. In 1957 the average farm used 414 kilowatt hours monthly, up from 171 in 1947, while bills rose 91 percent and the cost per kilowatt hour fell 21 percent from 3.22 to 2.54 cents.
Firefighters contained a blaze early today that damaged part of the Ohio State University Armory in Columbus. No damage estimate was available.
Washington Zoo officials ordered a formal investigation after a two year old Canadian girl, Julia Ann Vogt, was decapitated by a lion in the lion cage during a family visit. Her grandfather, Harry Jackson, aged 67, suffered a mild heart attack while trying to intervene.
Clarence Mc Laughlin, 42, survived an explosion that wrecked his three bedroom house in Columbus and damaged nearly 20 nearby homes. He told police he lit a cigarette after disconnecting a gas pipe and laying on a couch. Witnesses said the blast lifted the roof and collapsed the walls.
Explorer III, the third U S Earth satellite, is going silent with one radio dead and the other erratic. Officials predict a atmospheric reentry and disintegration around mid July possibly after a meteor cloud collision. Sputnik III reportedly circles the globe, suggesting Soviet lead in reconnaissance tech.
Two Druze leaders in Lebanon were expected to meet for peace talks as government forces restored calm in Beirut after weeklong riots. The armistice could boost pro Western President Camille Chamoun against opponents, while sectarian violence and editor Nasib Matni's slaying underscored rising regional Cold War tensions.
The FDIC announced Farmers & Citizens Bank of Lancaster Ohio will assume Rushville Banking Co deposit liabilities. Until completion the Rushville bank continues normal operations and will become a branch of the Lancaster bank. All depositors remain insured by FDIC.
Mayor Francis Myers reports Glenwood Addition work will restart Monday. Contractor Gene Fitch states crews will complete water and sewer lines, curbs gutters and a blacktop street to finish the Glenwood improvements.
In Caracas Venezuela the government junta named Lt Col Rafael Alfonso Bavard new governor of the federal district replacing Col Miguel Ramon de la Rosa amid rioting against Vice President Nixon. Bavard previously led the Venezuelan Development Corp.
Marvin Nungester reports 500 channel catfish weighing 1 050 pounds stocked in Lake Logan Friday. The fish from Lake Erie arrived by tank truck from Sandusky, average two pounds, 14 to 24 inches, with Don Kline and District 1 personnel assisting. It is the second stocking, following last fall.
Alan E. Miller of Haydenville pleaded guilty before Mayor Francis Myers to driving left of center and leaving the scene after a hit skipp on Rt 33 two miles south of Logan. He was fined 20 dollars plus costs on the first charge and 100 dollars plus costs on the second. The accident involved a northbound Miller vehicle and a southbound Franklin Tippie car with minor damage. Miller was arrested when he returned to the scene about 30 minutes later.

The Ohio Department of Highways will open bids June 10 for a Rt 75 improvement spanning seven miles in Falls Gore Two Hocking County and Coal Two Perry County. The project widens and resurfaces the state route and widens a 23 foot bridge over a branch of Monday Creek to 36 feet. Bids also planned June 10 for Pickaway County bridges on County Rd 7 over Driffy Run Circleville Twp and Walnut Creek Madison Twp.
In Columbus the Navy displayed its first supersonic carrier based bomber the A31 attack weapon system powered by Air Force jet engines. The craft uses an advanced inertial guidance system with gyroscopic devices to stay on its pre set course. A NA and Co hangar roll out Friday night offered no exact speed but estimates suggest well over 1000 miles per hour when flight begins next August.

Senator H. Alex Alexander Smith announces a bipartisan effort in the Senate to restore a $339 million House cut from Eisenhower's foreign aid bill. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will begin drafting a new authorization for fiscal year starting July 1, with House action totaling $2.9589 billion plus $644 million carried over.
The economy appeared to pause after months of decline with signs of improvement in construction contracts, housing starts forecast, and consumer spending. Industrial output and stock prices remained weak, while unemployment claims fluctuated as initial claims rose and total benefit claims fell.
Tokyo police pursue the May 8 death of T. A. D. Jones Jr. in an Imperial Hotel suite. Four Navy airmen died when a photo reconnaissance plane collided with a Cougar jet over the Atlantic shore near Jacksonville Florida on a Friday. The jet pilot Lt jg David McCulley age 24 from Garden City New York parachuted and was unharmed. A witness John W Fritchett described the jet striking the rear of the photo plane causing it to flame and crash into the ocean beach at Little Talbot Island.
The 30 day forecast from the Weather Bureau projects below normal temperatures east of the Appalachians and in the Southeast, above normal temperatures from the Great Lakes to the Rockies and the West Coast, with subnormal rainfall in the Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes region. Central Plains and Southern Plains expect above normal rainfall. near normal elsewhere. Local: Hocking County notes 83 degrees at 11:30 a.m. with a warm, partly cloudy weekend forecast and possible thundershowers.
Two Hocking County taverns were cited by Ohio Department of Liquor Control agents. Walter and Mildred Rutter, doing business as Green Gables, were cited for selling intoxicating beverages to minors on February 12 at Rt. 33 and Union Furnace Road. Oprea Shark, doing business as Five Mile Inn, was cited for gambling on premises on April 29 along Rt. 33 south of Logan. No hearing dates have been set.
City police investigated a minor two car collision at 6 40 p m Friday on W Hunter Street just west of Wood Street. Drivers were Barbara St Clair 18 Logan Route 4 and Mary M Dominick 46 Cleveland. St Clair said she pulled from a parking place and struck Dominick's rear.
