In Rockford Illinois Lester Bracukhurst, arrested again near Brewster New York, confessed to a string of robberies and three murders across three states. Troopers report the youth, once pictured praying in court, is accompanied by a female companion upon arrest.
Clyde Anthony of Washington Township is six feet ten and a half inches tall and still growing at age twenty. He lives on a Tresboro area farm with his mother and two brothers, while his father George Anthony died two years ago. The Anthony men are all tall, with Clyde taller than his six foot four father and brothers Vernon and Herb. Clyde says he has grown two and a half inches in the past year and remains the tallest man in Hocking County.
Akron officers report county jail and the hospital ward of the county home under quarantine by order of health officer R H Markwith after 19 year old William Tivaterra dies from spinal meningitis. Cultures from 97 prisoners show eight carriers, with quarantine to last at least two weeks.
In Hudson county courtroom the 17-year old Gladys MacKnight and her 18-year old sweetheart Donald Wightman go on trial for the murder of Helen MacKnight, 47, in Bayonne. Judge Meaney and Prosecutor O Reagan impose strict security to keep the proceedings orderly. Police stand guard to ensure only those with special letters from the prosecutor’s office gain entry.
Mrs Thomas Collins is seriously ill at her residence on No Walnut street. She has been confined to bed since Saturday.
A brown Leghorn hen at William DeHaven’s farm near Laurelville adopted six orphaned kittens after their mother deserted them. She keeps the brood warm in a nest in the henhouse and defends the chicks with a bold, protective stance, returning to care for them if removed.
In Lancaster Ohio on May 17 union officials faced police actions at city limits as Police Chief Gail Lesler barred entry to CIO representative George DeNucci and UAW unit president Avery Dennis. DeNucci claimed workers petitioned CIO aid to organize at Hocking Glass. Lesler alleged local opposition to CIO and vowed to bar DeNucci to prevent trouble. The incident followed a citizens meeting and ongoing labor tensions.
Three appeals from Ohio Industrial Commission decisions are set for jury hearing in Hocking County Common Pleas Court this week. The first case involves Leona Coots challenging a commission denial of death benefits for her husband Carl Coots, who died Sept 29 1933 while managing a Logan Kroger store. The death is claimed to be due to overexertion aiding in unloading a sugar truck. Other scheduled cases include Cecil Davis vs State Industrial Commission Tuesday and Chester Mitchell vs State Industrial Commission Thursday.
Everett Saylor of Dayton drove to a new unofficial world record for half mile dirt tracks during qualifying at Greenville, clocking 22.3 seconds. The time beat the former 22.8 second mark officials cited as the previous record in the Central States Racing Association program.
State Route 31 through Logan could become a United States highway if the State Highway Director's recommendation is approved. An executive committee of the American Association of State Highway Officials will meet in Chicago in June to act on the proposal. The plan designates a route from St Joseph Michigan to Richmond Virginia via State Routes 31 32 and 54 in Ohio, entering at Wilshire near St Marys and exiting at Pomeroy over the toll bridge. Local and regional officials back the move, arguing it would boost the Pomeroy bridge value as the route would pass through St Marys Wapakoneta Bellefontaine Marysville Columbus Lancaster Logan Nelsonville Athens and Pomeroy.
Montreal reports three of the quadruplets born to Mrs. Paul Martel, wife of a bakery wagon driver, died at St. Justine Hospital after birth. The first two fatalities, a boy and the only girl, occurred about nine hours post birth, with a second boy dying later.
WPA worker William J. Lemon 38, father of five, died after being buried by earth and cement during a bridge installation near Gore on Arnold Road. He died at Cherrington Hospital with internal injuries after remaining unconscious. James Kerns escaped with minor injuries. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM at Carbon Hill Christian Church with burial in Carbon Hill. Emma Lemon, widow, and five children survive including William Jr and four daughters.

The body of a young woman was retrieved from the Ohio River and brought to Hamilton County morgue. Coroner Frank M. Coppock Jr. said she had been in the water for a long time and estimated her age at 24 to 30 years while authorities sought clues to identify her.
Dr. Hugo Eckener and Dr. Ludwig Duerr are pictured at the Lakehurst inquiry into the Hindenburg disaster. Eckener says he will reserve judgment pending further testimony on the explosion’s cause.
Mrs Helen Tiernan 28, a Brooklyn waitress, confessed to killing her eight year old daughter Helen and assaulting her son James five near Brookhaven Long Island. The bodies were found in a thicket with their throats cut and set alight while the boy lay nearby burned and stabbed. The incoherent statements of the injured boy provided clues as investigators pursued motive and method.
Basque Loyalists on the Bilbao front clash with Insurgents on the Bascargi hills ten miles east of Bilbao. After hours of bombardment government troops seized a mountain stronghold in a close-quarters assault and pushed insurgent defenders from the upper slopes in a bloody hand to hand battle.
Canton Ohio May 17 AP Mrs Ethel Friddle 53 and William Brislen 4 were recovering in a hospital after a lightning strike at the home of Frank Homburg where they were attending a family gathering.
Elton D. Winnett aged 50 and Elmer E. Davidson aged 65 died when their truck was struck and demolished by a freight train three miles east of Cambridge Ohio. The incident occurred today and involved the two men who were occupants of the truck. No further details were provided.
London reports intensify over whether King George VI will publicly recognize the engagement of Duke of Windsor to Mrs Wallis Warfield. The Sunday Referee says a royal betrothal announcement is possible, while the Express cites objections to the twice divorced Warfield. The form and title of Mrs Warfield's designation remain unresolved within court circles.

Willis Chambers of Route 2 was fined $100 and costs by Judge Phil A. Henderson after pleading guilty to drunken driving. Chambers was arrested last night by Sheriff Joe Farbearn and Deputy Nellis Smith.
