In Hocking County the Lake Logan area draws many deer watchers after a report from the Jerry Blosser farm. A unusually tame young doe has been observed, grazing with cattle and approaching residents. Blosser notes he feeds the deer corn and the animal will eat from hands.
A 9 year old boy Jack Edward Thomas drowned at 5 30 PM in a deep pond near New Straitsville school caused by a swimming outing after a ball game. Divers recovered the body about an hour later. The Thomas family has faced multiple tragedies including an infant death and a boy struck by an auto last year. Funeral at New Straitsville Baptist Church with burial in New Straitsville Cemetery.
The State Industrial Commission filed a $7,750 damages suit yesterday against Ohio Penitentiary prisoner Morris Schiff 44 formerly of Steubenville owner of Ohio Iron Metal Co. Charles Blanchard died December 4 1948 while employed by Schiff.
The Senate prepared to vote on a bill to supply 2,000,000 tons of grain mainly wheat to India to combat famine. Debate was limited as amendments were considered, with shifts toward a straight loan versus gift of the grain. Senators Smith Humphrey Ferguson weighed donor versus loan terms amid Truman’s request.
The Bolivian army overthrew the government as President Mamerto Urriolagoitia fled the country and Gen Hugo Ballivián was named president and defense minister by a military junta. The junta declared control of mineral resources for public use and noted the May 6 elections produced a fragmented result that left Estenssoro with most votes but without a majority.
Haydenville grade school program features children from grades one through eight at the community hall tonight at eight. Sue Guess, daughter of Abe and Mrs. Guess of Greendale, an eighth grader, named May Queen for the festivities. Performances include First Grade “Friends We Greet You” and rhythm bands for second and third grades, “The Minuet” by third graders, “Dutch Dance” by fourth grade, “Klap Dance” by fifth and sixth graders, “Seven Jumps” by seventh and eighth grade boys, and “The May Pole Dance” by seventh and eighth graders.
John Mrdlane of Chicago, Illinois, reports seven crates of grapefruit stolen from his truck between May 3 and 6 while parked at the Logan Clay Products Company yard. The shipment, from the International Shipping Company, Chicago, was intended for Columbus but was refused there because seven cases were missing.
Rep Keating of New York says he has no pipeline but many government friends. He told the House a government limousine bearing President Truman s sister was stopped near Hopewell New York for speeding at 70 to 75 mph last Saturday. The driver Grady A Stowe a special agent guarding a president family member was fined 20 dollars and lacked a license. He warned the President would be distressed if his sister is detained. Keating had earlier predicted a White House employee connected to a mink coat loan would be discharged.
Logan received special recognition by the Ohio Traffic Safety Council for five consecutive years without a reported traffic death, part of a statewide contest in 1950. Hubard led with seven years, Celina six, with Logan also earning a home accident death reduction award for 1950, a 50 percent reduction. A council representative will present the award within the next month.
Five Hocking County residents were named for high scholastic and other honors at Honors and Awards Day at Ohio University on Friday. Special honors went to Frank W. Downhour and Thomas L. Hammer who were named to Kappa Delta Pi. Honor students included Robert L. Bateman Wilbur Warren Lanning George Allen Spackey and Hammer. All honorees held at least a 3.0 average and most ranked in the top 10 percent of their class.
Eddie Herzog of 130 Mineral Avenue reported to city police that a padlock on his cellar door was sawed off and several tools were stolen from the cellar. Missing items include a hand space hammer four chisels two small files and a sickle. Theft believed to have occurred between 5 30 P M Monday and 7 A M Tuesday.
News from Tokyo reports Red troops probing along Korea’s eastern front Wednesday night with strong blows from Chunchon toward the Sea of Japan. Allied officers warn the flood of patrols and artillery fire signals possible new offensive timing as 390,000 Reds stand ready.
Thomas C. Taylor 62, prominent Lancaster business leader, died of a heart attack Monday night. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 30 P M in Lancaster. He headed the Taylor Radebaugh Co. builders supply and coal firm and served as president of the Lancaster health board and former president of the Lancaster Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce.
Oxford May 16. Dr Edmund H Kase Jr of Chambersburg Pa will become president of Western College for Women July 1 succeeding Dr Philip E Henderson who has resigned.
The Ohio Senate moved to adjourn and sent unemployment compensation increases and a poor relief shakeup to the House. It approved two workmen�s compensation bills including a $3 million fund to raise minimum benefits to $25 weekly, and a raise to $32.20 weekly with higher death and hospital benefits. The relief plan would transfer administration to county districts and allocate liquor tax utilities to counties.
The thermometer rose to 83 degrees by 11 30 A M in Hocking County with a year’s high of 87 set on May 1. Yesterday’s peak reached 85 at 2 P M and the overnight low was 44.
In the first 90 minutes of the Red Cross bloodmobile stop in Logan, 59 pints were donated toward a 125 pint quota. Local officials were pleased and expect the goal to be met as the unit remains open until 4 PM, with walk-ins welcome until closing.
Realtors and real estate salesmen from Hocking County were invited to the annual district conference of the Ohio Association of Real Estate Boards to be held at Hotel Lancaster in Lancaster on Thursday. Harold Goodrich of Springfield, president of the Ohio association, will open the conference with the address Whats Ahead, outlining the real estate outlook for the remainder of 1919.
Mrs. Robert Fickel receives news that her brother the Rev. Luther Heyde and his wife and two children have arrived in Ohio after five years in India as Lutheran missionaries. The family sailed on the Queen Mary, landed in New York Monday, and are visiting the Cretcher home in Bellefontaine as relatives plan a reunion next Sunday.
A tornado swept into Formosa from the west killing four people and wounding over 100 in the southern region. Property damage exceeded 1,000,000 dollars as officials assessed the destruction and emergency crews aided survivors.
Lancaster's wildcat gas venture on Turkey Run near the Fairfield Pickaway county line ended yesterday when drilling was abandoned at 3200 feet after striking water 600 feet into the Trenton sand. The well failed to produce gas and was labeled a duster by operators.
In Columbus on May 16 Frank Branch 19 of Columbus and Kenneth Bolding 17 now at Mansfield Reformatory were indicted for first degree murder in the slaying of Miss Virginia Bates.
In a Senate MacArthur hearings session General Omar Bradley faced Republican charges of an iron curtain over witnesses as he refused to reveal private talks with President Truman. Bradley stood by confidentiality, offered to discuss general conclusions and reasons from the chiefs of staff, and was kept from further questioning until Monday while lawmakers planned a noon vote on forcing disclosure.
Akron area salesman James N. Gape must decide whether to move to England for an estate valued near 250000 dollars. His wife and brother Kenneth oppose, citing loss of U.S. citizenship and lack of incentives. If neither accepts by June 30, a British nephew could claim the will.
