NATO foreign ministers left The Hague after a three day meeting without resolving Cyprus tensions or France's stance toward U S leadership. They expect new or reinforced U S and British leadership this fall to restore unity while France seeks to preserve national policy within a still united alliance.
Robbie Johnson earns the top senior athlete honor at Logan High School during the Chieftain Boosters awards assembly. He and Bobby Stewart were the only two to earn four varsity letters, with Johnson also named top football back and outstanding basketball player among seniors.
Near Tan Uyen 25 miles north of Saigon a Viet Cong ambush destroyed a government relief convoy, killing 51 troops and wounding 30 including an American officer. Missing soldiers numbered ten as U.S. advisers plan increased air force strikes and expand Vietnamese pilot training to boost attack capabilities.
In Oregon six candidates appear on the Republican presidential primary ballot as polls open under fair skies. Early turnout is light but officials expect a record GOP turnout around 265000 with Henry Cabot Lodge leading in pre polls though the margin narrows.
In the May 2 district state scholarship exam at Ohio University three Hocking County students earned top state rankings. Logan High School senior Janie Holloway tied for fourth in Spanish II with 116 of 120. Logan High School freshman Jeffrey Gerken tied for 14th in plane geometry with 46 of 52. Union Furnace pupil David Stivison tied for 14th in chemistry with 121 of 128. District rankings will be announced later.
George R. Utley, president of Godman Shoe Co., says a potential sale of the 1660 Gallagher Ave building will not affect operations in Logan. The firm is expanding, adding a dealers line of Deevers shoes for girls and Clara Barton shoes for nurses, and making Sears products. A possible new $400,000 building may be built between Logan and Nelsonville with loan plans discussed by the Logan Trade Club and ARA.
Premier Nguyen Khanh signed a decree recognizing the Buddhist Church in South Viet Nam and abolishing restrictions from French and Diem era rule. The move lifts a long held favor for Catholicism and ended a trigger for last year’s Buddhist demonstrations and Diem's overthrow.
The Ohio State Bar Association approves a plan to merge lower courts into common pleas courts and seek a constitutional amendment redefining supreme court powers. The proposal includes appointive paths in some counties, salary hikes for judges, and creation of a tax appeals court and board of claims.
Charles Pancake of Nelsonville secured the Democratic nomination for the 9th-16th Senate District in Ohio by 521 votes among 30 000 cast across 11 counties. He will oppose Republican C Stanley Mechem of Athens County in the general race as the official count and certification proceed.
Senator Stephen M. Young of Ohio asks state central committee members to oust William L. Coleman as Ohio Democratic chairman. The committee, meeting in Columbus, is expected to reelect Coleman, with Joseph Sarosy and Morton Neipp named as possible replacements.
Clear skies across Ohio with record temperatures noted early. Hocking Valley expects continued fair weather through Saturday as highs reach the 70s and fog reduces visibility near the Ohio River. A high pressure area dominates the map with a weak cold front slated to move through late Saturday.
Gov. Rhodes and mediator Montoney announce that the Operating Engineers Union will continue working day to day after the contract extension ends tonight avoiding an immediate strike. The agreement covers 185 million dollars in highway projects across Ohio. The 15 day extension follows the old contract expiration April 30 after all day negotiations at the statehouse.
Hocking VFW Post 6430 at 51% S Mulberry St was cited by the Ohio Department of Liquor Control for alleged after hours consumption on April 5. A hearing will be scheduled at a later date, the department spokesman said today.
Logan to complete parking meter revamp by July. New eight foot maneuvering spaces between cars will increase total spaces and improve cross traffic vision. Meters on Hunt er and Second Sts are being reset. No rate changes.
