Washington report shows organized labor's sway in Congress at a decade low as Senate and House back tougher union curbs. The vote alignment mirrors a push for stricter regulation, with veto risks and possible presidential action shaping strategy on a revised Case Labor Disputes Bill.
The Senate passed a 350 million dollar relief program for war ravaged Europe and Asia by a 79 to 4 vote, after opposing a 150 million dollar cut sought by Truman and the State Department. A compromise with the House could yield about 275 million, with Marshall naming Austria Greece Hungary Italy Poland China and Trieste as likely recipients. The debate included rejection of relief to Russia, and a separate 400 million dollar aid to Greece and Turkey awaits final compromise.
President Truman signed portal-to-portal pay liability ban into law and urged Congress to raise the minimum wage from 40 to 65 cents an hour while signaling defects to be fixed. He pressed for broader coverage and immediate action to ensure stability for workers and business.
A tornado ripped through Findlay Ohio injuring at least 26 people at a trailer camp after striking at 4 PM yesterday. Forty two trailers were destroyed or damaged as the storm toppled trees disabled power, and caused roughly one million dollars in citywide damage across Findlay with additional farm destruction near Higby Station Ohio.

In Cleveland on May 14, 4500 AFL carpenters in Cuyahoga Geauga and Lake counties averted a threatened strike by accepting a 12% hourly wage increase offered by three builders groups.
Scientists report a green and black soil mold from Larchmont Laboratories showing specific curative effect on influenza in chicken embryos and mice. The mold named LL47 came from global soil samples. no human tests yet. Researchers A J Liebman D Perlstein and G A Snyder of Schenley Distillers lead the work with about 50 researchers at the site.
Albert Thomas Jr and Heman Mills of Roseville pleaded guilty to grand larceny before Magistrate Frank St Clair and were bound over to the grand jury under $500 bond each. They allegedly stole a $60 two wheel trailer from Hocking Hills Country Club. Sheriff Floyd Duffy recovered the trailer in Roseville and arrested the pair.
The Ohio supreme court agreed to review the case of Kenneth Salter of Toledo who is under sentence to die for the rape slaying of 11 year old Barbara Dunn in Columbus.
The House veterans committee approved a bill to raise minimum rehabilitation payments for service connected disabilities 30 percent or more. Minimums rise to 115 for single veterans, 135 with a wife, and add 20 for one child and 15 for each additional child for married veterans.
Dr. Roger E. Heering resigns as Ohio state health director amid protest over House finance committee cuts to health department funding. Heering says lawmakers lack public health vision and urges fight for more money. His resignation takes effect May 31. James Bauman may serve as acting director.
In Cleveland on May 14 a new weapon will be tested to deter pigeons in Public Square. A supersonic whistle will emit a sound inaudible to humans but repellent to birds. Public Properties Director Arthur L. Munson said the device, used at Churchill Downs in Louisville, will be tried in the square after recent sod renewal.
Adams Hudzieko, 65, a hermit living with five cats, was found dead in a cluttered cabin piled with cans bottles pipes chains kettles shoes ironing boards bedposts and clothing. Police say death due to natural causes and compare the scene to the Collyer brothers case in New York.

Brown aged 34 a New Straitsville native has been named principal of Lancaster High School succeeding O H Schaaf who resigned Brown currently serves as assistant principal of Bedford High School He is Ohio University graduate near completion of a master's degree and was chosen from more than 50 applicants Stark salary 4200 first year 4400 second year starts August 1 He will move with his wife and child to Lancaster after Bedford term ends Brown taught seven years in New Straitsville where he graduated from high school.
Hjalmar Schacht former Nazi finance minister and Reichsbank president was moved from a Stuttgart hospital to a Ludwigsburg internment camp to serve an eight year sentence handed down yesterday by a German denazification court.
Rev J C Byers 70 former Hocking County minister and school teacher died Tuesday at Doctors Hospital Columbus after major surgery. Born Good Hope Township Hocking County he taught in Brownsville and Bunker Hill schools before joining United Brethren ministry. Survived by son Rev Waldo E Byers near Toledo and two daughters Ruth Hill and Prudence Foust Columbus plus brother G W Byers Logan. Funeral Friday at 2 PM Washington Avenue Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Meadville Pennsylvania May 14 Charles Mehalko 45 of Conneautville will face a Friday hearing on charges he chained his 20 year old daughter to a chair in her room for two days to prevent her from running away to marry.
Dann O. Taber executive secretary of the Ohio Development and Publicity Commission will speak at the Hocking County Chapter Izaak Walton League meeting at Camp Hocking Thursday night. The commission promotes the scenic area of Hocking County and Southeastern Ohio and other sections of the state. The program follows a dinner at 6 30 P.M.
