Fifteen Logan High School musicians competed at the Ohio high school instrumental and ensemble contest at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Led by W. Richard McCutchan, the group traveled from Logan with transport funded by officials and parents. Contestants aiming for superior ratings to reach the national contest in Elkhart Indiana include William Knapp Luther Heyde Robert Price Harry Shaw Ralph Poston Dale Engle Harold Dawley Lee Evans Benny Wellman Helen Funk Robert Hauk Virginia Butterfield Frances Kelch Walter Stone Donald Knapp and others in brass woodwind and percussion divisions.
In New York on May 14 Horton Smith held a three stroke lead and a one under par 139 ahead of the final 36 holes of the Metropolitan Open golf championship.
In Genoa on May 14 AP reports Premier Benito Mussolini accuses the so-called democracies of anti fascist bias and warns that totalitarian states will unite and march together if a doctrinal war arises. He cites Woodring Ickes and Ethiopia issues as factors shaping Italy US tensions.
Funeral services for A. J. Emmons age 83 retired farmer will be held Monday at 1 30 P M at Union Church Falls Township. He died at a daughter’s home near Laurelville. Body to be taken to another daughter’s home Sunday. Burial at Oak Grove cemetery. Logan by Heinlein Bros.
A funeral for Dick Chaffin, former Logan resident, will be held Sunday at 2 P M at McDougall Church on U S Route 450 between Sugar Creek and Athens. He died yesterday in Portsmouth. His widow once ran Anne's Beauty Shoppe in Logan. Friends may call at 30 North College Street in Athens until 1 P M Sunday.
Mexico enters a diplomatic rift with Britain after expropriating Royal Dutch Shell oil properties worth 250 million dollars. Mexico withdraws its London minister and closes the legation while Britain considers economic reprisals. O'Malley warned of denials of justice, as Mexico cites unfriendly attitude and political motive.
Mayor Dallas Kinser welcomes Legionnaires to Logan for their Eighth District convention. He praises their humanity work and assures visitors Logan citizens will host them well, expressing gratitude from the city and Logan Post 78 for securing the gathering.
Virgil Carr of South Perry pleaded not guilty before Judge Mell G. Underwood in Columbus to receiving stolen property from an interstate railroad shipment. Thomas Pritchard of Laurelville drew a year in prison and $600 fine for possessing an unregistered still. Ramey Nutter of Green Township also faced liquor violation indictments.
A bipartisan Senate bloc led by Senator Byrd VA aims to remove all public works funding from Roosevelt's 3.154 billion spending loan package. They would back WPA and direct relief but oppose pump priming via public works, proposing state cost shares and penalties for political use of funds.

NEW STRAITSVILLE OH May 14 AP James R Cavanaugh chief engineer in charge of the federal drive against a subterranean mine fire announced the flame front had been turned back on the first of three barriers. Miners are returning to work as the fire walls cut through the coal bed and mud is pumped to seal the barrier before spreading.
Bellevue Ohio May 14 AP A refrigeration room holding 50 tons of cherries and three deer carcasses survived as the rest of the Gypsum Canning Co cannery near Mount Pleasant burned. Superintendent A C Dormoe estimated the loss at 75000 dollars.
In Delaware Ohio on May 14, the trial of 18 year old John Joseph Deitch for the alleged abduction of Ohio Wesleyan University students Clara Mae Kerr aged 22 and Charles Hopkins aged 20 is scheduled to begin May 23 in Common Pleas Court, Judge Fred Wickman presiding.
Columbus Ohio May 14 AP State Highway Director John J Jaster Jr emphatically denied he ever engaged in any scene or conspiracy to defraud the state in road material purchases He testified at a Common Pleas Court hearing on an injunction sought by Agnes B Dickinson over payments on Hot Mix and Bituminous materials contracts He also denied asking an estimator to fix an estimate and said he sought to have a law changed to limit public inspection of highway engineers estimates
Reports of heavy crop losses due to frosts Wednesday and Thursday nights spread through Vinton County as McDaniel of Bailey and Arnold and Jud Johnson of South Bloomingville reported frost-bitten apples. Most trees in the orchard were killed, with few on the highest ridge surviving.
A Japanese army communique said the Lunghai Railway, key to Japan's central China campaign, had been severed east of Tanghsnan. Mobile troops reached the line and immediately blew up a bridge in the operation reported from Shanghai on May 14.

Berlin May 14 AP Baron Gottfried Von Cramm Germanys top tennis star was sentenced to one year in prison for violating a Nazi morality statute. He was found guilty of improper relations with 18 year old Jewish youth Manasse Herbst who emigrated to Jerusalem March 15, 1936. Two months were deducted for time served since his March 5 arrest ending an Australian tennis tour.
Columbus May 14 AP State civil service employees were told by Attorney General Herbert S. Duffy that political activity beyond voting and expressing opinions violates civil service law and could lead to penalties.
