Fireplug shaped dog tags spark a dispute in Seattle as animal lovers claim the new tags discriminate against female dogs. City licensing head Warren Watson says there was no sexist intent while a Kentucky tag maker notes prior complaints from women groups.
Judge James Stilwell issued a temporary restraining order against Coffman Stair Co. in Hocking County, delaying transfer of Logan plant orders and equipment to Marion Virginia. Local 1279 seeks a permanent injunction and damages of 500000 plus 500000 punitive. bond set at 10000. hearing May 18 at 1 p.m. in common pleas court.
President Carter plans to sign a $4 billion public works measure in the Rose Garden with 25 mayors watching. The bill aims to create up to 600000 jobs through road repairs hospital and library construction and police facilities funding. Carter praised the plan as compatible with a balanced budget and cited support from unions and local government appropriations.
Outlook extends into 1978 with 4.9 percent real GNP growth this year and 4.4 percent in early 1978. Unemployment edges down toward 6.5 percent by mid-1978 as inflation slows in the first half of 1978. Corporate profits rise about 11 percent with an 11.8 percent jump in nonresidential fixed investment. The group urges tax reform and lower taxes for productive sectors while criticizing policy uncertainty under President Carter.
In a Frost interview Nixon portrays himself as in charge of U S foreign policy noting overtures to China and U S actions in the 1973 Middle East. He says Kissinger initially resisted Cambodia operations and recalls ordering broad air support to Israel after the Yom Kippur attack.
Names of 85 eligible voters will be drawn at 10 a.m. Thursday May 19 to serve as prospective jurors. Of those, 50 will join the common pleas court jury for the April August term and 35 will be drawn for county court jury duty.
Michael E. Hoyd and James L. Mowery were held to the grand jury in Hocking County Court under $3,000 bond each after preliminary hearings on jail escape charges from May 2. Hoyd faces an additional count of corruption of a minor with a May 2 alleged sexual act. Hoyd bond set at $2,000 with a May 16 hearing. Annam Mowery and William Garrett were also charged with obstructing justice and held or scheduled for hearings, Garrett postponed due to hospitalization after a cardiac arrest.
