Vargas moves to wipe out rebels in Canton case

Canton Ohio May 12 AP police pursued new lines in the Rose Cable murder case as Theresa Ludwig under investigation over alleged involvement and motives. Cable remains in custody for questioning while investigators probe Ludwig claim that professional killers from Cleveland carried out the deed.

Marines Seize Amoy Port as Refugees Flee

American bluejackets patrolled Kulangsu Island as Japanese forces captured Amoy, occupying Amoy Island and its port. Foreigners were reported safe while refugees swarmed the area. Japanese advances continued on the Shantung front toward Langhai railway, with Langtzehu and Lunghai positions falling as Chinese resistance persisted. The destroyer Edsall set course from Shanghai for patrol duties along the south China coast.

Decoration for Legion Meet Sparks Main Street Preparations

Decorators began lighting up Main Street with red white and blue flags for the Eighth District Conference of the American Legion to be held here Saturday and Sunday. A banquet opens at Elks Hall Saturday evening, then a Beta Hall dance and open house at Legion rooms with music by State Treasurer Clarence Kinsley’s office staff. Sunday features a business session parade speeches and drum corps competition in the afternoon.

Hocking River on Survey Schedule

Ohio streams are listed in an authorization for engineering surveys of protective needs by the House Control Committee. The $10,000,000 appropriation has not been approved yet and includes the Miami Chagrin Muskingum Short Creek Tiffin Hocking rivers Bellevue conservancy district and areas around Athens.

Hail 2 Feet Deep Hits Kansas Town

Hail drifted two feet deep in Belleville during a 15 minute storm blocking entrances to business buildings and shattering windows. The hail damaged much wheat nearby with stones up to seven inches reported in Phillipsburg.

Columbus Ohio May 12 AP The special legislative session to consider a 17 million relief program may also hear Gov Martin L Davey push a state welfare building plan Availability of federal funds will likely decide whether the governor asks to enact legislation to carry the plan forward Officials say industrial Ohio has one in five of 6 6 million residents on WPA aid or general relief If federal funds are available the plan could cost 10 to 15 million with a 50 year amortization. funds would likely come as loans and a constitutional method to accept them is moot

Thousand Volunteers Hunt Lost Girl In Pennsylvania Woods

Bradford Pa May 12 a search for four year old Marjory West continued as 1 000 volunteers from the American Legion Post 108 joined the effort. A $200 reward had been offered four days after the girl wandered from a family picnic in heavy woods near an oil field worker's home.

Special Jury Pushes Probe Into State Affairs

A Franklin County grand jury advanced its second investigation into state affairs with several more witnesses summoned. The probe centers on civil service employees being assessed five percent of salaries for a Democratic campaign fund and whether classified workers were improperly pressed to elicit petitions for the Draft Davey campaign seeking Gov. Martin L. Davey a third term with about 500000 signatures.

Girl 17 Awaits Kidnap Hearing in Federal Case

Dorothy Hilterbran, 17, of Hillsboro, awaiting a Monday hearing on charges of violating the federal kidnap law in the abduction of 65 year old Har ley Spruance of Hillsboro. She pled innocent at a preliminary hearing before U S Commissioner William P. Hohmann. Warrants are out for James Merritt and his wife Edna, Dorothy’s sister. Spruance said the trio threatened him during a ride into Indiana but turned back when he agreed to pay $3,000. Miss Hilterbran said she was forced to accompany the Merritts on the trip after being abducted from Adams County and surrendering in Springfield.

State Approves Settlement for Hocking County Taxes

State Tax Commission approved the February tax settlement for Hocking County totaling 173,640. Distribution to follow in days. Deputy Auditor Blanche England notes the breakdown: county 48,930, townships 18,638, schools 86,098, cities and villages 16,985. Deductions for elections and other state charges will be made before distribution. Real estate and public utility taxes total 170,652 with small amounts for county, township, and city special assessments.

Washington May 12 AP Final Congressional approval of the new tax program leaves treasury officials with prospects of about 50 million dollars less income for next year than expected. Original estimates planned 5 330 000 dollars revenue but lower business activity and reduced corporate profits would cut that figure. President Roosevelt was expected to approve quickly as the measure alters undistributed profits and capital gains levies.

Cleveland May 12 The Ohio Power Co was accused of Wagner Act violation by N L R B trial examiner Charles E Persons. The report alleges direct aid to the Topco Employes Association and orders withdrawal of recognition and notice to 2500 employees of free choice to join any union. If not complied with within 10 days the matter goes to Washington for action.
