The Ohio House approved a demerit plan to curb dangerous driving by 106 to 20 vote. The bill, backed by Gov. ONeill, moves to the Senate with penalties from six to two points and a 12 point trigger for license suspension, plus required retesting on reissue.
A passenger plane crashed in flames near Madrid airport in front of farm houses, killing all 37 aboard. It stands as Spain's worst air disaster.
The House passed a compromise housing bill to ease down payment requirements for FHA insured loans and boost mortgage credit. It also authorizes about 250 million for slum clearance and urban renewal and a similar amount for housing for military personnel the elderly and others.
Hocking County Commissioners approved a 30 mile per hour speed limit on Lake Logan Road effective immediately after petitions from 40 residents calling for the measure. A second petition to blacktop the road from Route 664 to Route 180 drew no action.
A KC97 refueling plane with a seven man Ohio crew ditched 200 miles southwest of the Azores in bad weather. The Nord Sea tanker Sandefjord picked up all seven airmen from a life raft in good condition. Names listed include Lt Col Bruce H Abraham Jr and Maj Robert Rawlinson among others.
Funeral services for Forest E. Weinrich aged 62 were held at 2 p m at Heinlein Funeral Home. Weinrich, a Logan attorney and former teacher, died Wednesday morning after a heart attack. He practiced law in Logan since 1925 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
In Akron, Salvatore Campisi’s pinball machine paid out free games despite warnings. After police found teens playing it, the machine was seized, Campisi paid 25 dollars and costs, and the smashed unit was discarded after a sharp turn.
Charles R. Duffey pleaded guilty to improper exposure in the presence of a minor in Mayor Francis Myers' court. Held to the grand jury on a $5,000 bond after arrest on Market Street, Duffey is jailed awaiting grand jury action for alleged mistreatment of a seven year old Hilltop girl who was driven to Claybank Hill.
The House passed a bill by a 99 to 11 vote sending it to the Senate that would double most fees charged by county treasurers auditors clerks recorders and sheriffs. The measure faced substantial floor opposition due to many increases more than doubling.
In Bogota the dictator Gustavo Rojas Pinilla was ousted after opposition from the church business leaders and people. A military junta took over as celebrations erupted with cries of liberty. Rojas had planned a new term after a June 1953 coup. Disorder and strikes followed across major cities with reported deaths.
Senate investigators linked Teamsters leader Dave Beck to profits from brokerage fees on union funds invested in Detroit area mortgages. Hedlund testified Beck and two others split a 7 500 fee on 12 million dollars in mortgages as about 9 million of Teamsters money flowed through National Mortgage Co. Beck’s wife’s nephew held a one third stake in the firm. Beck has invoked the Fifth Amendment. investigators plan further questioning amid ties to Anheuser Busch and a Seattle distributor with Beck Jr. in a related venture.
A westbound B and O freight derailed five cars near Athens blocking the main line. Track damage was extensive but no injuries were reported and officials could not immediately determine the cause or reopening time.
Mrs. Ruby Mc Coy, 37, of Cheshire, died at Meigs General Hospital as the eighth victim of a three car crash south of Middleport on Ohio 7. Her husband Marshall 40 and three family members were among the dead. six died at the scene and a seventh died later in hospital.
WAVERLY The Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers union started a strike against Goodyear Atomic Corp. operators of the Atomic Energy Commission plant at Piketon. The union filed a 48 hour strike notice and began about 7:25 am with pickets at all gates. They seek a 27 cent per hour raise plus fringe benefits, while company offer details remain undisclosed.
President Eisenhower urged radio and TV appeals to build backing for a $520 million reduction in the foreign aid program while proposing a $3.8 billion package. Senate leaders clashed over totals, with Russell pushing cuts to about $2.4 billion and Aiken signaling room for further reductions. The plan calls for $2.8 billion in military and related aid and $1.08 billion in economic assistance, including a $500 million loan fund.
Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako visited Tokyo's International Trade Fair as American color television was a chief attraction. The monarchs toured the exhibition, underscoring postwar tech links.
Ohio auditors find Orient State Institute in Pickaway County keeping a former patient as a patient employe 29 years after discharge. The 65 year old man, with Civil Service status, operates grounds with two helpers and is paid 15 dollars a month. Report cites lack of central office policy, poor record keeping, insufficient staff, and virtually no fire protection.
The Appropriations Committee trimmed 272 million from the Agriculture Department for the next fiscal year and proposed 3.69 billion in new funding while urging a curb on the soil bank acreage reserve. The report cites a 17.5 percent drop in farm income and calls for a new legislative approach to rural distress. The committee also plans phased cuts of the acreage reserve program from 750 million to 600 million then 500 million in following years.
Circleville jurist William D. Radcliff was named to the Fourth District Court of Appeals to replace the late Russell K. McCurdy of Portsmouth. Gov. O'Neill set May 15 as the effective date to allow Radcliff to finish Pickaway County cases. The governor will appoint Radcliff's Pickaway County successor, with Harley Meyer previously endorsed for the seat.
Washington reports seasonal gains in April with total civilian employment at 64 261 000, up about 400 000 for the month as outdoor work rises. Unemployment falls to 2 690 000 in the joint Commerce and Labor Departments release.
The outlook shows temperatures averaging 2 to 5 degrees below normal with highs of 68 to 73 and lows of 47 to 50. A cool spell moves in Saturday and Sunday before a warmer pattern toward the end of the period. Precipitation totals 1 to 2 inches in scattered showers tonight through Monday.
