Congress backs a Truman Council of Economic Advisers plan to trim spending and even cut excise taxes and delay a Social Security payroll tax hike. Leaders favor restraint over new taxes as the economy faces rising pressure and potential wage and surplus risks.
Wheat firm and closed higher on short covering and new flour buying. Corn firm with light country offerings. Oats steady and up with corn. Hog futures weak to 25 cents lower, top 18.75. Cattle steady to 50 cents higher, top 28.00. Stocks irregular with leaders seesaw. Bonds lower as trading expands.
Berlin set to reopen travel, trade and mail as the blockade ends at midnight. General Chuikov and Western powers plan daily freight flows of coal and groceries, with 12 000 tons daily and streets to fly the West German flag. Taegliche Rundschau calls the move a success for Soviet unity policy.
Pasadena May 10 The four year old Larry K Page who was pronounced dead after a car struck him and who was revived by artificial respiration and a heart stimulant remains in critical condition. Doctors say extreme shock and fat embolism caused the stoppage of breathing and that moving him for x rays is unsafe.
In Columbus on May 10 the House taxation committee backed Rep. Irvin A. Miller's bill to re enact a three percent state admissions tax. The measure would have the state collect the tax and distribute funds to the locality of collection, reversing two years of local only collection.
Cambridge May 10 Archibald MacLeish Pulitzer Prize poet has been named Boylston professor of rhetoric and oratory at Harvard University.
Maj. Gen. Raymond W. Bliss said he plans to ask reserve medical officers to volunteer for one to 29 days of duty each month to relieve a staff shortage. Questionnaires will be sent to 14,300 doctors, 5,548 dentists, and 1,372 veterinarians.
Airlift troops in Celle Germany urge a V E day style holiday to mark the end of the Berlin blockade and call the airlift a personal victory. Lt Truman Lucas and others from Indianapolis Taunton North Hollywood praise the end of the blockade and a possible celebration. Trains and trucks will shift duties Thursday but morale remains high as relief potential eases pressure.
Arthur Wright a seventh grade pupil from Logan Junior High School was injured on North Street in front of Central School. He suffered a fractured left leg, shock, and bruises and was taken to Hocking Valley Hospital. The driver was Richard C Gerken Jr a Logan High School senior.
Logan observes Clean Up Week with collections by city trucks in wards one to four and South Logan. The Logan Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors the effort with the city. Residents should place trash in containers to be collected and not returned. missed pickups will be dispatched from the waterworks office.
The Agriculture Department estimates the 1947 winter wheat crop at 1 021 476 000 bushels as of May 1, up 1 790 000 from a month earlier. The figure compares with last year’s 990 098 000 and the ten year 1938 47 average of 726 553 000 bushels.
In Columbus Ohio a deadlocked jury failed to reach a verdict in the liquor permit bribery trial of A. E. Oppenheimer and Hugh H. Ruel. The judge discharged the jurors after they could not decide guilt or innocence. Shively testified he was solicited for a bribe to expedite a nightclub permit which the liquor department said was not issued due to quota limits. The indictment remains pending and a new trial may be scheduled.
In Murray Kentucky on Sunday at Antioch Cemetery a 6 year old boy, Jackie Young, was crushed when a tombstone weighing an estimated 4000 to 5000 pounds toppled onto him as he visited with his grandmother to place flowers. He died the next night in Murray hospital from injuries.
The Bay Village school board approved a $300 annual salary hike and raises in minimum and maximum pay scales for teachers, contingent on a November levy passage. The minimum for four year college teachers rises to 2400 dollars, bachelor maximum to 4000, and master's maximum to 4500.
The Navy announces 10 000 workers will be laid off in 11 naval shipyards in the United States and Hawaii by June 30 1950. About 7 500 employees will have left by July 1 1949.

City council voted unanimously to bar selling crime themed comics to youths under 18. Penalty set at six months in the work house and a $500 fine. Amendment making printers and distributors liable was defeated. No immediate details on enforcement criteria released.
The Hocking County grand jury returned five indictments and ignored two cases at its April session. Twenty-two witnesses testified. Indicted were Harold Budd Rusk for grand larceny twice, Virgil Ricketts for a reported incident, Eugene Karr for a reported incident, and George E. Bond for incident and battery. Cases against Harold Hoskins for non support and Richard Leo Danner for family mistreatment were ignored. Rusk, 31, was arrested on a Logan Col umbus bus near Groveport and charged with shoplifting from two Logan department stores. Ricketts and Karr, South Perry residents, faced a reported incident involving a 15 year old Circleville girl on April 3. Grand jury also inspected the county jail, finding it in excellent condition. Foreman was W. H. Mercer. other jurors were listed. Homer Schein of Rockbridge was fined 25 dollars for failing to report for grand jury duty. 15 dollars was remitted and costs assessed.
John Wyskiver 70 died at 11 58 P M yesterday at the home of his daughter in Logan following a period of failing health. A native of Nelsonville he was a retired coal miner who had lived in Logan for years. Survived by his wife and daughters Sylvia Ryan Mansfield Merle McCabe Somerset Beatrice Blaton Logan son William Wheelwright Ky two sisters Ella Wlover and Lou Matheny Mansfield. Funeral 2 PM Thursday Leonard Funeral Home Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
