Marine General Vandegrift Dies at 86 Leader of Guadalcanal
Marine Corps General Alexander A. Vandegrift died Tuesday at Bethesda Naval Hospital at age 86. A Medal of Honor and Navy Cross recipient, he led the Guadalcanal invasion and served as commandant from 1944 to 1948, to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He is survived by his widow Kathryn, a stepson, eight grandchildren, and a great grandchild.
