Allied Chemical Faces 1094-Count Indictment Over Kepone Pollution

Richmond AP Allied Chemical Corp faces a 1094 count federal indictment for polluting the James River with Kepone and two other chemicals. If convicted on all counts the company could be fined up to 17 million dollars. Life Science Products Co and its owners were also indicted.

Tremors Hit Italy as Earthquake Death Toll Climbs

Four aftershocks shook northeast Italy early today as rescue workers search for survivors of the quake that devastated the region. Officials fear cholera, urge doctors and medicines, while 628 people are known dead and more than 2,000 injured. A 4.2 magnitude tremor added concern, with Thursday's quake at 6.9 and widespread damage across the area.

Meat fraud alleged in beef sales to armed forces

Sen. Lawton Chiles says several meat wholesalers defrauded the government by more than 100000 dollars daily in selling beef to the armed forces. He cites one day at 250000 dollars and notes some days over 100000 dollars in illegal profits. A Pentagon official warns of possible fraud collusion and conflict of interest in military inspection of about 110 million dollars in beef bought annually from civilian contractors.

In Beirut the 98 member assembly chose Syrian backed Elias Sarkis on the second ballot to end Lebanon's civil war. Leftist forces shelled around a villa serving as a temporary parliament building while 69 members arrived, exceeding the required quorum by two.
