May to 7 Bond Sales Top $678 At City Schools

The weekly school officials report shows May 3 to 7 Bond and Stamp sales totaling 678.05 with Junior High leading at 413.20 followed by West 145.95 East 17.30 and Central 70.30. The story notes a Girl Scout Fund Drive starting Monday with 7 troops 135 scouts across Brownie Intermediate and Senior groups plus a planned professional trainer and a central meeting place. The organization runs a summer camp for all scouts.

Food program plan launched in capital

Associated Press reports plans for a 2.0 billion dollar annual food subsidy program, with meat coffee and butter subsidies aimed to cut costs by 10 percent starting June 1. Funding through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, possible subsidies for canned fruits and vegetables and other foods are under study amid congressional opposition and questions of authority.

First tin can drive to start in Logan on May 10

Logan launches its first tin can collection campaign Monday May 10 at 9 A M. Residents are instructed to remove can tops and bottoms and flatten them for easy handling. County trucks will collect compressed cans from city curbs starting at 9 o'clock and continuing all day. Support the war effort by aiding this vital tin drive.

Capt Gable on First Bombing Raid Over Antwerp

London reports Capt. Clark Gable, former film star, flew as an observer on the Fortress Eight Ball Second during the May 4 Flying Fortress raid on Antwerp. He said he enjoyed it and learned a lot. The mission passed without enemy planes and had only two small flak holes.

City Returns to Fast Time on Monday in Logan

Logan will revert to Eastern War Time next week except Court House offices. Logan Retail Merchants Association will open on last time starting Monday May 10, with hours unchanged. Schools will operate on Eastern War Time beginning Tuesday May 11 due to delayed student notification.

Willow Grove Mine Idle as Men Strike

Bellaire Ohio May 8 The Hanna Coal Co Willow Grove mine idle amid a dispute from the general work stoppage. About 200 day shift unionists refused to enter the shaft after fines of 2 dollars each for April 29 and 30. Night shift also did not work and others may follow. Union leaders say fines illegal. company cites old contract terms. The mine operates under government orders pending new directives.

Three Die in Auto Train Crash at New Lexington

Three New Lexington residents died Friday night when a car at the W. Mound Street crossing collided with a northbound Toledo and Ohio Central passenger train. The vehicle was hurled into Oxawoosie Creek, over 100 feet from the crossing. Victims were James O. Bailey 50 Nell Inman 45 and her 3 year old son James.

Immigration authorities arrested the Rev. Robert Anderson Jardine and his wife Maude Evelyn Jardine, who married the duke and duchess of Windsor in Los Angeles. Driver Narrowly Escapes as Tractor-Trailer Crashes

John Riddle of East Second Street narrowly escaped death when brakes on his tractor-trailer locked and it crashed into a tree at Rising Park Lancaster. He suffered facial lacerations and body bruises, was treated at Lancaster Municipal Hospital, then sent home. The trailer crushed the tractor and threw him clear. he operated the outfit for Sam Riddle.

Germans Claim 13 Allied Convoy Ships Sunk

The German supreme commander announced on Saturday that 13 convoy ships totaling 74 gross tons and 16 ships totaling 120,000 tons were sunk by German submarines in the north Atlantic. An Allied corvette was also sunk and two other ships were hit by torpedoes, the German broadcast said.
