Ohio politics heat up as Democrats face further tax bills. The House approves a $1.808 billion two year budget to fund state operations and highways, while Gov. Di Salle presses his tax program. The parimutuel tax bill passes the House 77 to 56 with mixed Republican support.
The Steel workers Union charges the steel industry with antitrust and labor law violations and asks the government to monitor activity amid possible July 1 strike plans. Union officials say no strike strategy is decided yet but protest industry arrangements they view as illegal.
Washington AP The largest batch of mail to Rep. John E. Henderson shows protest against hunting and capturing unbranded horses or burros out west. Henderson says Americans are mostly unselfish with a soft spot for animals and notes that direct government controls or tax increases may not mobilize action.
Washington AP reports potential changes at the 1960 national party conventions as longtime chairs Rayburn Martin and McCormack may not return. Rayburn hints at a possible speech, Martin faces leadership ouster questions, and McCormack rejects heading the Platform Committee.
The Ohio Senate approved, 26-6, a bill to allow hunting Bob White quail on lands owned or controlled by the state. The measure follows a decade after quail were removed from the songbird list to fund propagation efforts. Senator Guyer warned of habitat loss and proposed a $2 quail-hunter tax. Other measures advanced include track betting taxes, union dues for government workers, and state park protection rules.
Eugene Oliver, 20, of Stockport, Ohio, pleaded guilty to second degree murder and received life in Ohio Penitentiary. He shot Thomas Camden Roach, 31, a South Charleston clothing salesman, on February 11 as they traveled to a basketball game in Athens after meeting that day in a tavern.
In Little Rock Arkansas three segregationist School Board members face recall after the board, amid protests, voted to fire 44 teachers including Forest Park Elementary Principal Frances S. Wood. Forest Park Parent Teacher Association then backed a recall effort under a 1958 law aimed at removing integrationist-leaning officials.
A bomb damaged the parked car of Robert Morris 46 of Ludlow Kentucky the head of a faction seeking to enroll Local 100 members into a new local. Morris said this means war and will report gangsterism to the union national headquarters. Local 100 has been racked by intra union strife since last year's election backing James Hoffa.
An 18 member white grand jury indicts four white youths for raping a slender Negro coed. The jurors heard from the 19 year old victim for nearly seven hours before presenting the case to Circuit Judge W May Walker in a hushed courtroom.
Ohio Civil Defense plans a second phase of Operation Alert 1959 testing local government resilience after a simulated nuclear strike. Officials simulate 14 days of survival with 4,470 square miles burned, hospitals jammed, power at 10 percent, and daily deaths near 9,000 as state agencies prepare to take over.
Ohio Fuel Gas Co will replace 13 sections over more than two miles of 18 inch pipeline in Hocking Meigs and Athens counties. The project transports natural gas to multiple towns and industrial sites, with Floyd Six of Athens supervising. Work should finish early in June.
The Ohio House approved a pigeon killing bill 95 to 10, allowing destruction of common pigeons while retaining protections for homing pigeons. The measure moves to the Senate where similar bills have stalled. Rep Bernice K. MacKenzie explained the change aims to legalize extermination. The House also sent to the Senate a bill allowing non profit clubs to operate pheasant shooting preserves.
In Moncton New Brunswick Elmwood School girls team quit after five innings trailing Notre Dame School 116 to 19 in a Wednesday softball game. Notre Dame dominated with strong offense and dominant pitching leaving Elmwood unable to respond.
Four men Eugene Douglas Sharp The Plains 25 George Walton 31 Chauncey George Burdette 45 The Plains and Lance Russell 21 Glouster were indicted by the Athens County May term grand jury for malicious destruction of property during the Carborundum strike. They allegedly threw gasoline at the home of Carborundum employee Charles Root at 4 a.m. Feb 12. liquid not ignited. They pleaded not guilty to both charges at arraignment Feb 17. Bond set at 600 for arson and 400 for destruction of property. all to appear May 13 in common pleas court.
A large industrial building under construction at Westbury Industrial Park collapsed around 11 a.m. trapping about 20 workers. One killed and several injured as rescue crews, cranes, and ambulances swarmed the scene on Long Island. Witnesses described a roaring collapse and fear amid dust and debris.
Ohio Governor Michael V. DiSalle said he will sign a emergency bill today to release an estimated 25 million dollars in supplemental unemployment benefits immediately. The act, sponsored by Rep. Roger Cloud and former interim governor John W. Brown, arrives from the Senate for prompt enactment.
A 40 man posse scoured rugged terrain near Ilesboro for William Howard Clark a 30 year old BIS cook missing since Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff Waldron announced the manhunt ended at 1 p m with no new developments. Clark last drove south on Rt 33 in a panel truck. the search involved Fairfield County deputies mounted units and BIS officials.
