Conferees from the House and Senate reach a compromise on an economic stimulus bill with broad tax breaks for most workers. The plan boosts standard deductions to 2200 for singles and 3200 for couples, aiming to ease the June tax bite if both chambers approve next week.
Paris AP report says the United States and Vietnam agreed to drop opposition to Vietnam joining the United Nations and to resume talks in Paris within two weeks to pursue rapid normalization of relations. Vietnam pledged more effort on missing in action cases and to provide more information on U S servicemen.
A conference of Arab oil ministers heard that several OAPEC members may skip the planned five per cent price rise set for July 1 sticking to existing prices. The group comprises seven Arab OPEC members plus Egypt, Bahrain and Syria with others in OPEC.
Finance and safety committees propose higher volunteer pay from 3 to 5 dollars for monthly training, 5 to 7 dollars for answering calls, reduce fire chief hours from 48 to 44 weekly, create five lieutenant grades up to 3.39 per hour, terminate assistant chief position, and discuss salary status later. Additional talks cover new firemen and traffic light usage with state and local industry leads.
White House energy adviser James R. Schlesinger insists the standby gasoline tax remains part of the energy plan despite heavy congressional opposition. He argues the tax would prompt conservation with rebates as a tax credit, while critics call it unfair and predicts likely defeat.

Stevens Cheri L. Howard Mary E. Martin Kathryn J. Freeman and Walter K. Brown.
A heavy downpour dumped 1.3 inches of rain in the Hocking Valley since Tuesday afternoon. The forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of more rain tonight and 70 percent Thursday. Highs near 80 and lows around 60. At 11 a.m. today it was 62 under cloudy skies after an overnight low of 55. Tuesday's high was 75.
Earl T. Barnes won the Ohio GOP chair with a 24-19 vote, succeeds Kent McGough and will serve until after the June 1978 primary. He plans to travel the state to gauge GOP opinions while stepping down as Hamilton County party head and endorsing broader minority involvement. Brown urged unity under a single organized party structure.
