Anti war protests in Washington faltered as police reported more than 7000 arrests and federal troops began withdrawing 4000 troops from the streets. By midday another 200 arrests were logged amid leaderless demonstrators while traffic on Potomac bridges returned to normal and injuries were limited to about 100 hospital visits.
A cold snap swept the eastern United States from Lower Michigan to Tennessee and North Carolina. Unseasonably frosty conditions persisted, bringing freezing temperatures and widespread chill to the region.
The report notes a frosty 26 degree low in the Hocking Valley with 58 at 11 am and expects warm, unsettled weather in the southeast. Tallahassee logged 39, Mt Washington saw seven inches of new snow, and broader trends include rain in the northeast and northern Plains with mild western conditions.
In Washington judges set bond for 7000 antiwar demonstrators arrested for disrupting streets. Bail was high and the process slow with some arguing excessive bail aims to keep protesters off the streets. others say the government seeks convictions as families and youths await hearings.
Two men who had pleaded not guilty to indictments by the Hocking County grand jury changed their pleas to guilty before Judge Harley Meyer in common pleas court. John Salsberry 31 Logan was sentenced to six months in county jail with cost payments. jail term suspended for one year. Robert MecDole 20 Rockbridge faces daytime breaking and entering of C E Neubauer Old Canal Rd property. case continued for probation investigation.
Dr. Richard L. Zay 58 a medical staff member at Doctors Hospital Columbus and former associate of Dr. Charles Rauch in Logan died Monday. He lived at 3920 Cleveland Ave Columbus and belonged to the Columbus Academy of Osteopathic Physicians Kohr Memorial Presbyterian Church and Linden Kiwanis Club. He is survived by wife Mary Katherine a son Larry Richard and his mother Mrs. Jennie Zay Lima. Visitation at Long Funeral Home Columbus Tuesday 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday until noon, and at Childs and Son Laman Lima 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with services Thursday at 1 p.m. Burial Memorial Park Cemetery Lima.
In New York the stock market advanced modestly to recover part of the losses from three previous sessions. Trading was active and the session showed a cautious bounce despite earlier declines.
Army Secretary Stanley R. Resor warned of a tough period ahead as U S combat troops withdraw and Vietnamization progresses. He praised advisory teams and noted South Vietnam’s growing responsibility in combat operations during his eight day South Vietnam visit. North Vietnam rejected a U S proposal for neutral POW interment and insisted prisoner release wait until a troop withdrawal deadline is set.
Lulu M Wood of Rockbridge Route 1 was appointed to the Logan Hocking County District Library board of trustees for a term ending September 9 1974 She replaces Miss Sarah Holmes who resigned The appointment signed by Judge Harley Meyer notes thanks from Logan and Hocking County citizens for Holmes service.
Barry Schweid reports that the Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, struck down major death penalty procedures after years of debate. The ruling affects 33 states with 641 men and 7 women on death row, governors’ powers to stay or commute, and about 115 appeals pending.
Congress moves to renew for a year President Nixon authority to impose price wage and rent controls amid inflation concerns. Senate approved 67 to 4 to April 30 1972 while House earlier backed two year extension. Debate centered on who holds power and potential impact on business and unions.
President Nixon and congressional Republicans prepare early legislation to guarantee 250 million dollars in loans to Lockheed to salvage the Tristar air bus program. Rep. Arends says the bill could be filed within two weeks to protect California jobs and the nation’s defense contractor. Nixon indicated a decision on aid would come by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Walter Ulbricht steps down as first secretary of East Germanys ruling Communist party. The move raises questions about future Berlin relations and the stance of East and West German leaders toward Moscow and the Berlin Wall. Wehner warned of initial rally around a new leader followed by uncertainty.
James Earl Ray once again nearly paid with his life while attempting to escape through a steam tunnel at Brushy Mountain State Prison. He emerged after about ten minutes with burns but survived, and was recaptured on the prison compound as he sought a route over the wall.
Primary voting in Logan shows 660 ballots by noon with 386 Republican ballots. Voters face two school district measures the $4.08 million bond and an 11.5 mill renewal levy. 12 precincts reported and 267 voting on the school issues only versus 288 at noon in 1969.
Logan TV Channel 2 will air results and WLGN radio will broadcast from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tonight. Returns will not be published in the Logan Daily News due to extended coverage and a light ballot.
Voters across Ohio cast 746 ballots by noon in 1967 primaries with no statewide issues but many school levy proposals. Falls Two reported 221 votes with 78 in 2-B and 33 in 1-A, while Falls Three precincts varied from 31 to 86 ballots. Local districts faced 275 measures including 158 tax levies and 54 bonds.
