Logan residents weigh private vs community ownership for Hocking Valley Hospital. A business and industrial group plans talks with the Hocking County Medical Society, which unanimously backed a community hospital last Tuesday.
Nine doctors name Dr H M Boocks as representative for future meetings. A Monday 8 p m session will discuss forming a community hospital association and raising funds to transfer ownership to the group possibly to city or county. Both groups vow full cooperation to keep the hospital as a county asset while owners Drs Jones and Yaw delay closing to allow a community option.
Vienna voters pick between Adolf Schaerf and Wolfgang Denk in a Sunday presidential contest. Schaerf 67 and Denk 75 are the leading candidates in Austria’s political race.
Warsaw three judge court awards custody of Olga to Monika Bozyk a naturalized American. Olga says she hates her birth mother and wants to stay with the Ostrowskis who have cared for her since 1944. Olga cannot be removed from Poland until appeals in 14 days.
A Aerobee rocket launched at White Sands, New Mexico, climbed to 125 miles above the desert base. A nose camera, released at peak height, sent back a 360 degree view of the upper atmosphere and solar activity before parachuting to earth. Recovery crews began searching for the camera.
At Lockbourne Air Force Base three O Beirne children Donald Barry and Bruce died asphyxiated when a two story apartment fire broke out. Maj A I Rapoport identified the victims. Maj O Beirne and wife Nancy Ann were injured with second degree burns. Damage was put at about 10000 with firemen and Groveport volunteers battling the flames.
Louisville bulletin reports Gen. Duke of the Calumet Farm withdrawn from the Kentucky Derby leaving Bold Ruler and eight other 3 year olds to race in the $125 000 added classic.
A freak power fadeout after a Navy plane damaged 220000 volt lines topside cut a canyon near Niles. Power sagged citywide from San Francisco to San Jose affecting tens of thousands as elevators stalled radio and TV fade stopped offices and homes. One official died and hospitals relied on emergency power.
Democrats meet in Washington for three days of strategy and a $100 plate fund raiser as they steer clear of civil rights clashes. Patman accuses Republicans of manipulating interest rates and credit while Kennedy faults the administration for insufficient unemployment relief. Over 700 pupils from 26 area high schools across eight southeastern counties gathered at Ohio University for district state scholarship tests. Logan Clay Products Co announces a million dollar plant plan on the north line of its current site in Logan. About 500 people filed through a Washington funeral home to view Senator Joseph R. McCarthy’s body. Marines stood near the casket as the Wisconsin Republican’s death from liver ailment was noted and plans were announced for lying in state and services in Washington and Appleton, with a high mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. President Eisenhower designated an assistant as representative for the Senate services.
Presiding judges at 11 city and 10 county polling places met to receive final instructions ballots and election supplies. Logan voters will vote on the four mill city operating levy while Republicans have full party ballots and Democrats vote in two wards for council races. Voters must have resided in the county and precinct for 40 days to be eligible.
