Democrats in the House won a motion to recommit the Wood labor bill, sending it back to committee. The vote was 212 to 209, leaving no labor bill before the House and signaling a stalemate as the administration and unions grapple with Taft Hartley repeal aims and await Senate action.
Congressman Walter E. Brehm of Millersport was the lone Ohio Republican to oppose the Wood labor bill in the House yesterday. Twelve Ohio Democrats joined him in voting no while eight Ohio Republicans backed the measure.
After late maneuvering the administration failed to push the measure through. Rep. Priest indicated only a fair chance for future action as a key amendment allowing closed shop contracts in states passing specific laws was approved. Rep. Hays offered the states rights amendment. House leaders, including Speaker Rayburn, had conceded the administration’s difficulty.
The Big Four powers announced agreement to lift the Berlin blockade with no fixed lifting date. A State Department note said restrictions in Germany will be morally lifted. Soviet Russia and Western powers planned steps to end the blockade by May 12 and hold a Foreign Ministers meeting May 23 in Paris.
The Athens County grand jury found no commercial gambling in the county after questioning 23 officials. It noted past gambling in former years due to lax law enforcement but urged officers to maintain the current situation. Indictments on seven minor counts were returned. A 150 member juror panel was drawn for the first degree murder trial of Harry Dodds Jr. and Grover Rawlins for the January 3 slaying of Miss Eleanor Gifford, with trial set to begin June 6.
The 1000 foot earthen dam to impound 400 acre Lake Logan is virtually complete. Earthmoving on the dam is done and Parkersburg Excavation Co. finishes grading and seeding the parking area and dam surface. No date set for closing the gate or filling the lake.
Detroit May 4 Negotiators raced to avert a strike by 60 000 Ford workers at the River Rouge plant. A walkout was set for noon tomorrow while UAW CIO leaders planned renewed talks at 2 P M as Ford Local 600 called a strike in defiance of the international union.
Ray Elston 49, a Grover Hill area farmer in Paulding County, was killed when an iron pipe he held touched a 7,200 volt high tension line. His son Lloyd 20 suffered severe burns while freeing his father from the pipe.
Akron draftsman Hob Hart completed a 36 mile walk from Akron to Cleveland in 10 hours 5 minutes exchanging worn shoes at Cleveland limits for a fresh pair. Followed by friends by car from 1 45 AM to 12 05 PM at Public Square he collapsed exhausted saying he would not repeat the feat for $10 000. He estimated bets around $2 000 and planned a Turkish bath before rest.
Mrs. Mary C. Roberts 72 widow of A. Y. Roberts died at home of daughter Mrs. Grace Farrington 33 Mitchoff Street Columbus after long illness. Survived by three daughters Lucile Cochran Miss Lord Roberts Miss Mary Catherine Roberts three sons Francis Logan funeral director Ray Bernard a brother William Bernhard and several grandchildren. The Census Bureau reports April unemployment fell by 151000 and employment rose by 172000 marking the second straight month of improvement. Non farm jobs dropped 255000 while farm employment gained 427000 signaling a seasonal farm work expansion.
Canton Ohio officials approve a one year $100 raise for teachers current pay scales range from $2 000 to $3 868 in the school system.
A blaze at the Crowell Collier Publishing Co plant in Springfield caused about $12 000 in damage last night. No injuries were reported and cause is under investigation.
Ohio House commerce and transportation panel votes 12 to 4 to table the 210 million dollar conveyor belt plan that would run from Lorain to East Liverpool with spurs to Cleveland and Youngstown steel mills. Opponents warn it would ruin rail jobs and condemn land, while supporters say lower coal and iron ore costs could boost industry.
Wilbur Oeffler a Union Furnace oil pumper fell fourteen feet from an oil derrick near Goat Run suffering back and possible internal injuries He was taken to a Logan physician for emergency treatment and then moved to Doctors Hospital Columbus Oeffler employed by Bell Drilling and Producing Co of Logan The exact accident details were not immediately available
In Ashtabula Ohio a 22 year old woman named Mrs Martha Therrion hanged herself in a city jail cell after being arrested a few hours earlier on a disorderly conduct charge. Police reported she knot a towel to a door knob and used a sitting position to strangle herself. Relatives were being sought to claim the body.
Ralph Reed a 27 year old convict in Cleveland is scheduled to die in the electric chair at Ohio Penitentiary. He was convicted of the February 6 1948 shooting of George Margulis secretary at a Cleveland steel firm in a $60 holdup.
A House conservation sub committee reported a substitute measure to form a nine member Sandusky Bay commission to study and regulate fishing practices, with a report due by January 15, 1951 and a $5,000 study appropriation. The bill would ban commercial net fishing in the bay and adjust net sizes and rules.
Wheat eased late selling erased early gains. Corn fell alongside wheat toward the close. Hogs were steady to 25 cents higher, top 18.60. Cattle steady to strong, top 27.75. Stocks moved higher in a broad advance. Bonds higher on strong rail demand.
Nelsonville voters chose Earl Hilleary as Republican mayoral nominee over W. D. Wolfe and others, and John Stocklen as Democratic nominee over Warren Robinettes. Hilleary led with 408 votes to 128, Stocklen beat Robinnette 95 to 22. Total votes 1 026.
Logan May primary election proved costly with Dean Collison noting each vote averaged about $2.03. Officials based the figure on 57 votes per precinct across 11 precincts, with expenses near $116 per precinct. Observers called it one of the costlier elections in years.
In Logan Democratic mayoral race W Denzil Weltner led with 214 votes while Elias E Bright had 101 and Harry W Shaw 268 in a three way contest. Republican president of council Roger W Friend received 280 votes while no nominee napp garnered 255. Solicitor Marion V. G. Jode. G tallied votes in the fragmented results.
In Logan's municipal primary only 624 votes were cast, a record low. Leslie G. Johnson defeated Richard C. Gerken for the Republican nomination for city solicitor 153 to 133 and will face Hubert D. Lappen, the Democratic nominee with 264 votes.
In Logan the Tuesday primary drew scant attention with only a single phone inquiry for results and at most five people visiting the Daily News office to check the tally.
The city primary shows Sam Bright unopposed in the second ward with 96 votes while James M. Meldrim, Republican incumbent, led in the third ward with 35 votes over Marcus Lohr. Nine write ins totaled small numbers across wards as officials finished tallying by 8 30 p m.
Precinct results from the municipal primary show Weltner repeatedly leading Bright across districts 1A to 4B in mayoral, ward council, and solicitor races. Johnson and Gerken split votes in solicitor and council contests with Meldrim and Lohr competing in the ward race.
