Dr H M Books said Tuesday he has heard from his son Sk3c Jack Boocks aboard the Ranger, recently reported sunk by Nazi authorities in Berlin. The Navy denied the claim. Boocks is in the ship’s sick bay with a light pneumonia.
Secretary of the Navy Knox said allied attacks on enemy submarines increased in April but warned it is impossible to judge overall success. He noted no significant rise in submarines in operation from March and attributed the higher attack numbers to more escort vessels and greater air coverage.

Detroit May 4 As production nears normal in Ford Rouge divisions management and the United Automobile Workers CIO begin a joint inquiry into yesterday’s 6000 idle workers stoppage. The company calls it an organized refusal to work while the union terms it a lockout. Most workers were back on the job today.
On May 4 the Navy announced American forces extended their hold in the Solomon Islands by occupying the Russell Islands just northwest of Guadalcanal, strengthening position in the area.
Fuels Administrator Ickes ordered a six day week for the coal industry as workers resume duties after a weekend strike crisis. About 3,850 miners run properties for the government under the order. Mines that fail to operate six days face possible cancellation of price ceiling increases to cover overtime costs. The War Labor Board expects Roosevelt’s backing to handle the wage dispute under wartime procedures while John L Lewis says UMW back to work but will not refer the case to the WLB. The next step, Ickes says, is up to fuel administrator Ickes.
State Highway Patrol reported the apprehension today of an escaped Cleveland rapist and three companions, including a girl nightclub entertainer, after an 18 mile chase through Medina Lodi and West Salem. Bullets flattened a tire and damaged the gas line tank setting the car ablaze. The driver was Edward Lewarski 25 who escaped Warrensville workhouse last March 26 during a six month sentence for raping a 17 year old girl.

Dutch sources could not locate the girl while patriots marked 47 alleged traitors for death, fourteen said killed.
James Franklin, 21, confessed to raping and murdering three year old Mary Jane Tankersley. He led police to the west side underpass where the nude body was found after he stabbed and strangled the child following a streetcar ride. He said he finished the assault when she was half dead.
