Logan voters face a decision on the four mill city operating levy. The measure would fund basic city services including police, fire, water, sewers, streets, parks, and buildings. The editorial urges strong turnout and rejects a city income tax as impractical for the town.
Federal grand jury in Tacoma charges Dave Beck leader of the Teamsters with two counts of income tax evasion relating to 1950. It accuses underreporting income and false return aiding building payments. Each count carries up to five years and a $10,000 fine as bail set at $5,000. Senate Rackets Committee hearings slated for Wednesday.
About 450 delegates are expected at the United Lutheran Church Ohio Synod convention to be held at Wittenberg College on May 20.
Washington reports department store sales in the Cleveland Reserve District last week rose 13 percent from the same period a year ago. The Federal Reserve Board released the figures showing stronger consumer activity in that region.

Senator Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin dies at 47 in Bethesda Maryland after an acute liver inflammation ending a volatile era. The anti Communist figure faced praise and fierce condemnation for his Army investigations and political battles with Presidents Eisenhower and Truman.
At the Logan plant 199 production and maintenance staff plus cafeteria employees rejected union representation by 199 to 137. Hal Kennedy of the NLRB announced the tally. The plant lists 411 total staff after including 45 office workers and 24 executives.
New York The Communist party has moved its national headquarters into offices once occupied by Vincent Astor. Astor, one of America’s wealthiest families, sold the property in 1942 and the party is leasing it now.
The Ohio Federation of Republican Women's Organizations held a oneday conference in Cincinnati as part of its activities.
The Governor Worthington chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced four award winners at Logan Junior High. Ruth Lackey and Mark Myers won citizenship medals for freshmen, while Judy Freeman and Danny Matheny received eighth grade history medals.
The Most Rev. Michael J. Ready bishop of the Columbus diocese dies at 64 from a cerebral hemorrhage. A Pontifical Requiem High Mass will be sung at St. Joseph's Cathedral Wednesday. He served as fifth bishop since 1945 and had led the National Catholic Welfare Conference Immigration Department. Auxiliary Bishop Hettinger assumes duties.
AEC official said two to four Kellogg Co workers at the Atom Lab in Houston have received radiation contamination. W B Converse of the New York firm said the situation is under control and there are no hazards, noting reluctance to name individuals to prevent secondary exposure and public hysteria.
Railroads extend reduced furlough fares for servicemen in uniform at their own expense for another year beyond June 30. The discounts are about 2% cents per mile.
Frank Costello, 65, was shot in the lobby of his Central Park West apartment as he arrived home with William Kennedy. A gunman opened fire from about 15 feet, a bullet nicked his scalp and a manhunt followed. Costello said he was mistaken for someone else and denied danger to the police.
A cold air front pushed into Hocking County sending the thermometer into the 30s last night. The daytime high reached 70 at 2 p.m. and 54 at 12:30 p.m. today. Forecast calls for continued cool conditions with tonight and Saturday low temperatures in the 30s.
In Columbus the Ohio General Assembly enters a final long recess as lawmakers plan a three week push to end sessions by May 24. The Senate and House advanced 30 bills and set 24 more for floor action. The Senate passed a city income tax cap proposal while voting on related amendments. The House also acted on measures affecting motorist deer carcass retention and voter registration rules.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles urged NATO in Bonn that Germany must be reunified and warned the Soviet Union’s peace protests ring hollow as the country remains divided. He cited humanitarian and legal grounds and backed Brentano’s push for a quick Western plan amid Adenauer’s domestic political challenges.
Public showings of color slides on the four mill operating levy will be held Friday and Saturday nights in Logan. Art Gasser leads the Citizens Committee for a Better Logan and says posters folders and banners support the levy. Mayor Francis Myers plans a final plea Monday on WATH at 1 30 p m to urge passage.
