In Columbus Ohio on March 31 a mob of about 300 attacked the home of Frank Hashmall a self proclaimed Communist leader. The raid damaged windows and furniture left bookcases intact. Hashmall and family were absent but returned later as police dispersed the crowd.
Elmer Sanner 20, a Logan youth in solo training for a pilot license, was killed when his plane collided with another after takeoff at Newark airport. The other pilot Earl Cummins 22 Hebron was uninjured. Sanner died of skull fractures at Newark City Hospital. funeral planned in Logan with calling hours at the church Saturday morning.
Chesapeake and Ohio reduces freight service by half through Logan with about six layoffs. Earlier a 25 percent passenger service cut was ordered due to coal-field work stoppage. Train 68 runs Logan to Pomeroy three days weekly, with return trips on the alternate days, and the Logan-Columbus freight shares this schedule. Passenger trains run Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays.
In Baltimore on March 31 a man kept three dollars in his shoe to guard against robbers. Police court fined him $2.45 for disorderly conduct after he was found on a street corner without his pants. The thieves missed the shoe stash amid the incident.

A nurse's cap stolen from Mrs. Florence Rindchen, secretary of the Stark County American Cancer Society, was returned by a small boy who apologized. He wrote that he took nothing from anyone who works against cancer and that his father died of cancer.

Allan Hull a 65 year old handyman was held for grand jury on $1500 bond after pleading not guilty to shooting with intent to wound. He was remanded to the county jail after failing to post bond following arrest by Sheriff Floyd Duffy for a Thursday night shooting at the Warren Smith farm near Logan. Smith a 72 year old bachelor was wounded in the left shoulder when Hull fired through a bedroom door.
Moscow radio reported the Soviet government protested to the United States over the detention of the Russia at New York. U S authorities halted the 16 595 ton liner based on a court claim that two passengers were injured in heavy seas.
Dr. Lewis Gardner Westgate, 79, geology professor at Ohio Wesleyan University for 39 years, died March 31 in Delaware Ohio. He was noted for his long tenure and contributions to the geology department.
Ohio supreme court rules profane epithets spoken on a public sidewalk do not constitute slander if no assault or threat is present. The ruling stems from a $5,000 slander suit by Kathryn V. Bartow of Huron County against R. D. Smith over remarks in Norwalk. The decision overturns the appellate court and affirming dismissal by a common pleas court.

Ohio introduces a statewide job development program to help college trained World War Two veterans and others find employment under increasingly competitive conditions. Starting April 5 the unemployment bureau will accept applications from graduates and students while college placement offices and the veterans service cooperate to place veterans in suitable jobs.
More than 500 spectators saw four championship games at Logan High School gym as the city wraps up its first recreation program. East Cubs, Central Pirates, Dodgers and Kiwanian Kids won league finals with standout scorers and teamwork.
Police Chief Sol Ellinger reminded Logan residents that a city wide dog ordinance restricting dogs from running at large goes into effect Thursday and remains in force until October 1. In Pushan Korea a fire destroyed a two story barracks and an orderly room. Three United States soldiers burned to death and a fifth was hospitalized with a broken leg. A sixth was missing and presumed dead. Damage estimated at $500000. No names released.
Funeral services for 84 year old William Lamb will be held at 10 30 A M Thursday at the Leonard Funeral Home with Rev Clinton Swengel officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Masonic services are set for 8 P M today. Surviving daughters include Mrs Irene Preston of Columbus and Mrs Lucy Gret of Frankfort Ky.
Pfc. Thomas W. Nash son of Mrs. Irma Nash formerly of Logan is among 5342 American dead to be repatriated aboard the Robert F. Burns and the John L. McCarley. Nash was missing on D Day and declared killed in action, with funeral arrangements to be announced. Survivors include brother Ralph of Columbus and relatives in Logan.
Helen Yvonne Richards ten year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Richards died suddenly at 6 A M today at her West Logan home. Funeral services are set for 2 30 P M Saturday at Leonard Funeral Home with Rev Stanley Hanby officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Survivors include her parents a brother John Herbert and grandparents Mr and Mrs James H Richards of Logan and Mr and Mrs John W Monroe of Logan Route 4. The body may be viewed at the funeral home after noon Thursday.
Ex-king Michael of Romania, 27, rode in a jeep station sedan with five companions and covered 55 miles from Detroit to Toledo at 70 mph without an escort, during a two hour visit to Toledo, Ohio.
In Cincinnati on March 31 about 270 workers from the Baltimore and Ohio and Chesapeake and Ohio railroads were laid off due to the soft coal dispute. The latest figures bring regional layoffs to roughly 1,000 as coal shutdowns persist.
President Truman obtained the board report on the coal strike and will delay further action until he studies it. He plans a Williamsburg Virginia trip where he will receive an honorary degree from William and Mary College and the report will be released after his return. The next step under Taft Hartley would be a Justice Department court injunction to force miners back to work.
