The Associated Press reports spring antics gripping colleges. In Fort Lauderdale 3500 vacationing students rioted over access to an unlit beach while in Bowling Green Ohio about 2000 students turned a fraternity water fight into a full scale demonstration.
President Kennedy aims to win passage of the New Frontiers program by pressing Senate support after House resistance. Vice President Johnson exhorts Democrats to mobilize, urging campaigning to win over Southern and border-state senators. Police quell student unrest at Fort Lauderdale and elsewhere as Easter break crowds spend heavily.
In Zanesville Ohio a helicopter hovered over a stranded boat on the Muskingum River and plucked three children to safety after the craft was drawn toward Ellis Dam. Firefighters aided by a line rescued the parents and six Civil Defense workers from the same spot.
Pravda welcomed a negotiated Laos settlement and urged restraint on SEATO intervention. It praised Britain and the United States for pushing a cease fire and international conference, urged neutral Laos, and warned U S advisers to leave.
In Holy Loch Scotland three young canoeists demonstrated against nuclear weapons near the U S Navy submarine Patrick Henry. Two managed to board the vessel before Marines intervened and turned them over to police for the incident.
A 14 year old Nelsonville youth Phillip Jack Whitmore died after a loaded .22 revolver discharged in a neighbor's home. Hubert Lee Davis 15 claimed the gun toppled from a peg rack as Whitmore grabbed it. Athens County Coroner ruled accidental shooting. Whitmore was an eighth grader at Nelsonville Junior High. Funeral set for Tuesday at Epiphany Church.
Donald E. Andregg a 41 year old sheep raiser from Baltimore died at Lancaster Fairfield Hospital after a Sunday shotgun accident at his father in law John Carrel's Union Road home. Sheriff Paul Hartman said the wound appeared self inflicted during an early morning incident. Funeral services set for Thursday at Bethany Church with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may visit the Frank E. Smith Funeral Home after Tuesday evening.
William V. The State Department said it has information suggesting a U S transport plane missing in Laos was shot down by Communist forces. Eight American airmen were aboard the C47 that departed Vientiane en route to Saigon. officials declined to identify crew details.
Washington AP report says Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and President Kennedy voiced hope for a peaceful Laos settlement. Talks touched on Laos neutrality and possible cease fire while fighting on the ground remained subdued. Western powers planned SEATO diplomacy as Pravda urged a table settlement.
Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona says he has no plans to seek the GOP presidential nomination in 1964 and would prefer to remain in the Senate for now. The statement signals no immediate campaign push from the widely discussed candidate.
Over the weekend six traffic accidents were investigated in Hocking County with one injury. Police and sheriff deputies issued eight citations. incidents occurred on Rt. 75 near Gore, Rt. 33 north of Rockbridge, and in several city locations including Front and Second Streets, and Market and Spring Streets. Drivers named include Charles W. Krietz and Jiles McCarty, with others from Athens, Wellston, Lancaster, Union Furnace, Obetz, and Pleasantville.
A train struck a car at a crossing near Middletown killing six year old Eileen Sturgill and injuring five others including her mother Mary Sturgill their four other children in critical to fair condition at Middletown Hospital The accident followed the family’s trip to enroll the children in a new school The father had died by self inflicted action the previous September.
The Ohio Division of Parks removed its boat stakes from Lake Logan and the Division of Wildlife plans to place new stakes later, leaving the lake stake free for now. Heavy rains raised the water level, causing beached boats to drift out. all were retrieved. Wildlife officials hope to install stakes soon, with no bids received yet for the concession stand. Fishermen reported catches of bullhead catfish and bluegills in small numbers.
