Mrs. Winifred Mason, Greene County’s first woman constable, aged 81, died yesterday at Greene Memorial Hospital. She served from 1920 to 1930 when a municipal court was established.
Five year old Dale Holmen bored with kite handing to brother Mark then dachshund Penny causes the string to drop. After a long chase the kite ends up snagged in a tree two blocks south then another snag and final retrieval a mile and a half away. Parents blame dachshunds for the mishap and suggest a moral about ground-hugging dogs.
The Ohio House passed a bill by 76 to 46 to require annual safety inspections for all autos and trucks. If enacted, inspections would begin July 1, 1956, at 9,000 state licensed garages with a $1.50 per vehicle fee split between the state and garages.
Velma Litzinger Bolden 62 of 45 Arlington Ave died suddenly at home after a period of ill health. She was a longtime bookkeeper for the Daily News and Democrat Sentinel and a Somerset native. Survived by husband George Bolden, stepfather Jesse Spencer, mother, half-brother Donald Spencer of Logan, two stepsons William and Clarence Bolden of Lancaster, and a California stepdaughter. Roberts Funeral Service is handling arrangements.
Vienna report says Prof. Erwin Stransky blames women for nervous breakdowns among executives. He claims women push men to earn more for luxury and cause manager's sickness. He also cites vanity as a factor in health decline.
Paul V. McNutt, 63, former Indiana governor and ex envoy to the Philippines, died in New York City today.
The Ohio House Education Committee endorsed a bill to create a nine member state board with one elected from each appellate district. The vote was 18 to 4 in favor, with reservations by some members who may amend on the floor. The bill faces Senate review and potential minority opposition to a governor-appointed board.
In Pikeville Kentucky Circuit Court two Hillsboro Ohio half brothers Henry Jennings 38 and Willard Hurt 28 were acquitted in the 1945 slaying of Kermit Damron 27 of Belcher. Judge F P Keesee halted the trial after 16 state witnesses concluding no crime or verdict could be sustained. Damron's skeleton was found last fall near Regina. Hurt wheelchair bound from a 1948 mining accident.
A Cleveland probate judge upheld a will leaving a $50 000 trust to eight grandchildren who must not smoke drink or visit places selling liquor and must show five witnesses in court. Judge Walter Kin der set April 15 for the grandchildren to appear with witnesses to claim their share. Byrer died in 1907 and the heirs include Lew Byrer 57 sports editor of the Columbus Citizen.
The FBI charged two Columbus men John Walter Lane 29 and Richard Williamson 39 in the October 1 17 720 dollar Pickerington bank holdup. Both are parole violators with long criminal records including armed robbery. A third man Joseph Sanders 49 remains held to a grand jury on 10000 bond.
Laurelville village council last night chose Philip Swackhammer as mayor to replace A F Jim Goodman who died of a heart attack on Tuesday. John Spencer was named council president replacing Artie Lowery who resigned. Spencer had joined the council March 7. Swackhammer heads the Laurelville PTA and belongs to the Laurelville Methodist Church. He is a retired teacher active in civic work. Other council members are Robert Bowers Charlie Thompson Dr Edgar Kelley T L Concklin and Francis Jones.
A family seeking 5 am wake up calls learned that Hocking County has many early birds. The ad patrons who posted in yesterday’s Daily News canceled after receiving numerous calls accepting the offer.
Maj. Gen. Leo M. Kreber named Col. Herbert B. Eagon as chief of staff of the 37th Infantry Division with the Ohio National Guard. Col. Oliver H. Gibson was assigned commander of the 166th Regimental Combat Team, replacing the vacant post.

FBI says Lima arrest of Tomasso Argento, 59, links to a 1922 murder of Giovanni Cammelleri in Sicily. Argento allegedly used the slain man’s name when entering the U S and is held for extradition after a bail denial. An Italian case may mirror the 1922 killing in Italy.

A 17 year old Russian defector Valery Lysikov said at a West Berlin press conference that a secret anti-Kremlin group called the Anarchists exists within a Soviet school in East Berlin.
