Columbus The House votes on a Senate approved measure granting party line phone users power to force others on the same line to stop talking during emergencies. The bill closely mirrors New York and Michigan laws and includes penalties for false emergency claims.
A safe containing $750 was hauled away early Monday from the Risch Pharmacy in Lancaster by thieves who could have entered with a key or hid inside. Police found no signs of forced entry. The safe measured 28 by 18 inches and weighed about 175 pounds. Stanley Risch said the loss includes $560 in cash $50 in silver and $140 in checks.
Muskingum College officials say the Smithsonian Institution reports the bones found last year in a nearby strip mine near St. Clairsville are probably from an American mastodon. The mastodon, an ancient elephant-like creature, lived during the glacial period.
Senator Albert Gore of Tennessee and 11 colleagues toured the Nautilus the first atomic powered submarine during an all night trip from New London Connecticut. Gore describes the reactor room mock firing and the crew living quarters noting the nuclear powered systems and the thrill of the voyage.
GOP leaders say President Eisenhower opposes a top level four power conference with the Soviet Union today. Laurelville mayor Alfred Foster Goodman 62 died at 6 30 a m today at home from a heart attack. He was the second Laurelville mayor to die in office in two years, with L A McClelland having died in 1953. A write in candidate, Goodman was elected the same year. The council will meet soon to choose a successor. He was born Feb 12 1893 in Adel phi, survived by wife Eunice Arledge Goodman and two sisters. Funeral Thursday at 2 p m in Laurelville Methodist Church, burial Green Summit Cemetery.
Sen Olin Johnston says enough votes exist for Senate approval of a 10 percent pay raise for 1% million federal employees, including 500000 postal workers, despite President Eisenhower signaling a veto if exceeds 7 percent. House action defers a decision.
Seventh Day Adventist president Reuben H. Figuhr says Christianity in Africa helps curb native terrorism. He notes growing resentment against white supremacy, but asserts Christian natives resist Mau Mau influence after two-month Africa mission inspection.
In Columbus a car carrying four youths raced a police car after a red light violation. The vehicle was struck by a westbound Pennsylvania Railroad train at a crossing, was carried 200 feet, and all four occupants Arnold Castle 18 Victor Sykes 17 Susan Pugh 19 and Roberta Pugh 21 died. One couple was ejected while the others were trapped inside. Police say one girl drove without a license and the chase began when officers stopped them for the light violation.
The Commerce Department reports 41 percent of U S families earn $5,000 plus yearly and 55 percent earn $4,000 or more. Nonfarm families average $6,390 while farm families average $3,460. Total pre tax income for the $10,000 plus group rose from 36 to 70 billion dollars.
David Davis, 62, of Patriot, Gallia County, was killed today at a county road work site after slipping and falling under a truck. Authorities said he appeared to have fallen beneath a vehicle while performing duties.
Las Vegas reports the sixth 1955 atomic test, likely junior grade, triggered at 5 05 am. A 500 foot tower shot produced a quick white flash with orange hue seen across Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The blast, felt seven minutes later as a minor earthquake by residents, involved about 2000 Marines in nearby maneuvers and was smaller than the March 8 test but larger than the baby A bomb.
Henderson Tennessee reports a famous Oklahoma heart specialist en route to Oklahoma faces murder charges for his wife and three children at a McAlester home. An escorting officer said he attempted suicide near Memphis.
A U S Navy transport plane with 66 aboard crashed into a mountain at the Lualualei depot on Oahu amid rain and low overcast. The Navy reported 69 dead: 57 passengers and 9 crew. The aircraft had departed Hickam Field and was en route to Travis AFB California when it crashed early today.
A wind storm around 7 a.m. damaged a Gibisonville barn on the Brashares property, blew off several roofs, felled trees, downed utility poles, and left a large Norway spruce collapsed but with no injuries. Roofs also blew from the Albert Redick residence at Mt. Pleasant. A sleet shower, then cold wave, followed, with temperatures plunging from 62 to 39.
Ohio Department of Highways reports Rush Creek overflow of Rt 664N by about three inches this morning, road remained open at noon. Surface water noted on Rt 75S near Roy Funk farm. Hocking River levee breach slight in Green Township. Logan pumping station clocked eight feet five inches, two inches fall by noon, flood threat eased as cold weather halted rise. Flood stage at the station is ten feet.
Reports describe a barn roof blown away on the R. L. Parsons farm and a tin roof from a small building on Poplar Street. A tree fell on Rt. 75 near Gore while a pole blew down on Rt. 33 north of Logan causing power and telephone outages. Wind toppled a toilet roof at Ilesboro school and downed lines, signs, and aerials across Logan and Marion Township with half an inch of rain overnight.
Columbus reports a Senate Conservation Committee session over land around six lakes Indian St. Marys Buckeye Moramie Guilford and Portage Lakes. Officials push a bill to end state real estate leasing permitting cottage owners to buy land they now lease while opposing a bill to replace dock fees with higher boat licenses. W M Flickinger backs selling lands under proper conditions. Sen Ted Gray seeks higher boat licenses to substitute dock fees, which officials argue would burden small boat owners.
Two drivers were fined for speeding by Mayor Joseph Phillips. Joseph King of Berea paid 10 dollars plus costs, and Craig Diss of Beechwood paid 15 dollars plus costs. Both charges were filed by the state highway patrol.
Iron ore consumption in February totaled 6 446 914 tons, up 660 189 tons from February last year, the Lake Superior Iron Ore Association reports.
