Demolition planned for Old James Building Logan OH

Hocking County commissioners expect to open bids Thursday for the demolition of the Old James Building next to the courthouse. Built 1860 61 by C W James it stood as one of Logan s oldest structures with historical ties to the Hocking Sentinel and Logan Daily News lineage.

Prices Rise At Korean War Era Rate

Washington AP reports February consumer prices rose at the fastest pace since the Korean War. The CPI advanced eight tenths on a seasonally adjusted basis led by a 2.2 percent rise in food and a 2.4 percent grocery surge. Meats poultry and fish climbed five percent. Non food goods and services also rose. On an unadjusted basis prices increased seven tenths with food up 1.9 percent.

Meeting on Sanitary Regulations at Logan Health Center

Sanitarian Donald A. Robers announced a 7 p.m. meeting at the Logan Hocking County Health Center inviting area sewage system installers builders developers and real estate brokers. Topics include past system problems current regulations state proposals future inspections new products and subdivision changes. License applications for 1973 should be submitted prior to the meeting.

Federal records associate 15 U S deaths with external hexachlorophene use in cleansing agents mainly pHisoHex. FDA banned nonprescription products in 1972, noting French infant deaths and brain lesions linked to bathing with HCP. Officials emphasize not labeling the U S deaths as caused by HCP.

Rare Albino Black Bird Spotted Near Duffeys Home

Mr and Mrs Lesley Duffey of Union Furnace Road observed a rare albino black bird in a nearby cornfield Tuesday evening. The bird appeared with a flock of thousands of black birds and perched briefly in the Duffeys’ tree, described as the rarest among the many species they have seen. They had kept corn for cardinals throughout the winter, noting 14 pairs of cardinals at one point.

Strikes Continue At Two Logan Plants

Strikes persisted at two Logan plants with no talks resuming. At MPP plant the walkout began March 1 and at Carbo Rundum plant it started Sunday after contracts expired. Negotiations had stalled and workers remained off the job.

Inmates End Rebellion At West Virginia Pen

West Virginia penitentiary hostages released after a 24 hour uprising. Governor Arch Moore said one inmate died Willy Hale of Charleston and five guards were held but unharmed by most. Demands totaled 10 with two non negotiable: no immunity from prosecution and unrestricted cash. National Guardsmen and troopers surrounded the prison.

Senior Citizens Housing Project Contract Delayed

A Tuesday contract signing for the Logan Metropolitan Housing Authority senior citizens complex has been postponed one to two weeks. Project director Gerald Sinnott said HUD paperwork from Columbus to Chicago and Washington, D.C., offices arrived late. about 180 applications have been filed for 71 units.
