A morning visit to Lake Logan revealed hundreds of redheads forming the largest group, with mallards, ring-necked ducks, American goldeneyes, shovellers, gadwalls, pintails, scaups, canvasbacks, pied-billed grebes, and a horned grebe also present. Coats of birds favored the upper shallow areas and midlake clusters, while coots were not observed on this trip.
Sen. Byrd said House leaders favor a 15 month extension of present corporation tax rates to July 1 1958. The plan aligns tax dates with the fiscal year start, avoiding revenue loss and easing future tax cuts. The House also trimmed $114.9 million from Labor and Welfare funding and reduced public assistance grants to states.
Anchorage photographer Ward Walls reports heavy damage on Adak Island after a March 9 quake in the Aleutians. More than 80 aftershocks have followed with Pacific tidal waves. Roads show splits up to 15 feet wide and 8 feet deep. guardrails appear severely damaged.
Senator Olin D. Johnston of South Carolina proposes legislation to cap federal workers at 2,125,000, reducing current totals by about 300,000. The Civil Service Committee chair aims to curb government employment growth.
Dockworkers at the port of Southampton walked out protesting government tugs assisting the liner Queen Mary to sail for New York. The strike threatens to paralyze the vast terminal and disrupt vessel movement.
U N Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold met Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Fawzi in Cairo to push for an Egyptian Israeli nonbelligerency pledge and for a plan to neutralize Gaza while keeping Egyptian administration. He planned UNEF troop deployment on both Gaza and Israel borders.
A 1 million dollar TB hospital on Johnson's Hill near Nelsonville opens for public view March 30 and 31. The 77-bed facility serves Ohio, with most patients expected from a 14 county area. Dr. Ralph Dwork cites federal funds of 350000 and a staff of about 100 under Dr. Harold Cashman.
The F. H. Brewer Co of Lancaster submitted the apparent low bid for 7.25 miles of Rt. 180 resurfacing in Perry and Laurel Townships. Lancaster bid was $53,207 with completion set for August 1. The Hocking project was among 19 highway bids opened today by the Ohio Department of Highways.
Lockbourne Air Force Base master sergeant Leean J. Adkins, 33, of Lockbourne, died in a collision at the U S 23 and Ohio 665 junction about four miles west of the base. Robert L. Wood, 26, of Wilkesboro, N C, driver of the other car, was injured, while passenger William C. Sloop of North Wilkesboro, N C, was uninjured.
Eamon de Valera formally resumed duties as Ireland's prime minister on Wednesday in Dublin. The veteran patriot retook the office amid ongoing political duties and government leadership.
President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Macmillan open Bermuda talks with Middle East and Suez problems top of the agenda. They meet at the Mid Ocean Club and plan two daily sessions through Saturday as they seek to strengthen British American cooperation and discuss Britain’s planned military cutbacks and commitments abroad.
The Natco strike entered its fourth week with all Ohio plants including Haydenville and Diamond idle. Negotiations with the United Brick & Clay Workers Union AFL continue after the expired contract on February 28. Haydenville manager C S Matheny said talks before the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Board showed no progress.
Spring warmth returns to Hocking County after a frosty start. Morning readings showed 21 degrees at 6 a.m., rising to 48 by 11:30 a.m., surpassing yesterday's high. Brief showers and milder air are forecast for tonight and Friday.
Columbus Ohio the Department of Highways creates an administrative assistant post to support deputy director Fred Reiners. The position is filled by 39 year old Robert E Stockdale of Twin Lakes formerly a Kent State University professor.
Chicago crime officials say teen age gangs resemble old time mobsters with rising violence. The Chicago Crime Commission cites 1957 projected crime growth from 1956 totals including 12 439 cases and teen gang attacks on workers and students.
Cincinnati reports William Presser of Local 114 and Detroit organizer Ralph Vanni are top witnesses in the Senate Rackets Investigation. The piece notes Presser backs an end to trusteeship set up by Hoffa, and mentions a probe into union funds used to buy a car for an organizer’s companion.
