Floods devastate the Eastern United States as spring arrives. Governor Earle orders liquor stores closed in Pennsylvania during the emergency. In New York a hotel elevator strike forces stairs use for weeks. Elevator outages intensify travel woes while officials fear fumes from gasoline may trigger explosions and long matches become illegal in some areas.
The Associated Press reports at least 168 dead across 11 states with about 225 million dollars in damage and 200000 homeless. National guard mobilized in Lewiston and several Massachusetts cities, while Merrimack and other rivers threaten life and property. Floods cripple Hartford and Pittsburgh area as relief efforts continue.
The 4714 foot crest of the upper Ohio River Valley flood passed Marietta Ohio shortly after 8 am. Water covered the business district and forced Marietta College to close as flooding extended to lowland homes. Officials said the river would fall over 24 to 36 hours and that the region faced more rain but only heavy rain could worsen the flood. The disaster left over 20 000 homeless and damages around 10 million dollars in the upper valley with 17 deaths in the Wheeling Martins Ferry area.
In Pomeroy Ohio with a population around 3568 residents residents brace for another Ohio River flood as waters rise near the town front door. Local stores stock up moving goods to upper floors while residents prepare for inundation common to the area.
