City Council in a special session authorized the mayor or service director to apply for federal grants to build a new Logan fire station and equipment purchases. The project, estimated at 295000 dollars, would require 20 percent city funding, with a later annual financial report noted on page 9 of the Logan Daily News.
Ohio State University reports Ohio had the largest increase in new unemployment insurance claims among leading industrial states in January energy problems pushed claims up 51 percent from the prior week 39 251 from 26 135 in the week ending January 22. Nationwide January claims rose 8 percent to 2.4 million.
Ohio public utilities commission approves a plan to let schools buying natural gas from Columbia Gas of Ohio switch from commercial to a special school category. The change would guarantee at least 70 percent of promised gas. the switch may raise costs, though Columbia Gas disputes this. Previously schools were grouped with commercial customers and faced severe curtailments this winter.

An adult and two juveniles from New Straitsville were arrested by the Perry County sheriff on breaking and entering and gasoline theft tied to the January 30 fire that killed Corning fireman Ricky Hoy and destroyed the New Straitsville station. They face possible manslaughter and arson counts as arson bureau investigates. Spencer, 18, is jailed. the youths are in Muskingum County Juvenile Detention.

New York markets opened mixed after a five session rally. The Dow Jones industrial average edged down about one point while gainers led losers among NYSE issues. Analysts said the recent advance showed signs of slowing from Wednesday's action.
Richard H. Holl of Logan Clay Products Co. was re elected to the Ohio Chamber of Commerce board at the 83rd annual meeting in Columbus. Lester W. Dettman, GE Cleveland regional relations VP, was elected president. Dettman succeeds Edwin L. Heminger as chairman. Heminger moves to chair the chamber board. Thirty nine Ohio business leaders were elected directors representing state regions and many business classifications.
