Gov. John J. Gilligan plans an $8 billion two year state budget with at least $1.5 billion in new taxes. The package emphasizes education and includes increased support for primary and secondary schools and boosted higher education funding.
The American Medical Association presented its private medicredit health program to a Senate health subcommittee in Washington. It offers a sliding federal contribution by income, with private operation and emphasis on improving delivery systems, manpower, facilities, and education. The plan estimates first year cost at 14.5 billion dollars, claims broad Congress support, and faces competing proposals from Nixon and Kennedy Griffith.
Stokley Carmichael told Central State University students that black power is finished and he now advocates a Pan-African land program in Africa. He argued Pan-Africanism unites all black people and calls for fighting for freedom and land beyond America.
New members will be accepted into the National Honor Society Friday afternoon during a Logan High assembly. Sophomores with 3.5 GPA or higher and juniors and seniors with 3.2 GPA or higher were evaluated by senior high teachers. North Vietnamese artillery and tank assaults targeted a South Vietnamese base in Laos near Sepone while U.S. helicopters supported the base. At Lolo east of Highway 914, eight hundred rounds tore into defenses. one American helicopter fell, with more damaged. Casualties mounted on both sides as air strikes and ground fighting continued.
