The Senate tightens debate to finish its farm bill version featuring a wheat price support plan opposed by the Eisenhower administration. Ohio Republicans and Democrats voice mixed support as debate continues on amendments and administration proposals.
Snow flurries and colder air expected Thursday as light snow drifts move across the state. Three-quarters inch of rain with sleet fell near Greendale and water covered Rt. 595. Ohio highways including the Turnpike turned slippery with north of the Greenville Bellefontaine Marysville Mount Vernon Cadiz line snow and rain split the state.
In Newark a patrolman Norris is found asleep in a parked car as a supervisor guards the beat. An alarm clock on the seat sounds at 1:30 a.m. waking Norris who is sent home for potential discipline while Police Chief Hall contemplates action.
COLUMBIA South Carolina three segregation bills and a fired senate page feature the day’s legislative scene. A House measure would fire from public employment any member of the NAACP. Raymond L Morton a 23 year old University of South Carolina Gamecock page was discharged for a campus article. He said it was an experiment to test campus reaction and he did not win the contest.
Judge Charles J. McNamee is sued a temporary restraining order against a labor dispute case. Freight handlers resumed work after mediation, with union claims of unfair labor practices under scrutiny by the court.
In Manchester, Nixon’s strong write in votes outpaced expected results and overshadowed Kefauver’s clear Democratic win. Kefauver secured all 12 Democratic delegates, Stevenson write ins totaled 3,419, while Nixon drew 18,367 Republican votes with 260 of 297 precincts reported.
A local meeting in Marietta Pennsylvania discussed police council matters but the record is incomplete. No clear decisions or actions are reported from the session last night.
The United States urged Greece and Britain to abandon violence and return to negotiations over Cyprus. It moved to publicize its stance, clarifying it will not take sides and supports creating an atmosphere conducive to talks. Elmer Otis Kimbell was acquitted of murder for the shotgun killing of Clinton Melton a 33 year old Black man at a Glendora service station on December 3. Witnesses testified Melton cursed Kimbell during an argument over gasoline. The defense claimed self defense.
Two Fairfield County Republican leaders, Charles E. Myers of Baltimore and William Carson Dagger of Lancaster, face trial on five counts for allegedly offering support for a Baltimore postmaster and soliciting political contributions. Johnson, acting postmaster in Baltimore, was targeted between 1954 and 1955 with dates tied to October 1954 and February 1954 offenses.
Columbus Lt. Gov. John W. Brown vows to open closet doors and expose political skeletons in the first television broadcast of his bid for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. He says his opponent Atty. Gen. William ONeill will use influence and money to build a bandwagon against him in the May 8 primary.
Gov. James C. Hale appoints 38 year old to the late Harley Kilgore's Senate seat in Charleston West Virginia as the U S Senate is restored.
A driver charged in a fatal crash involving Pte James Clarence Stump of South was released on bond after a reduction from 2000 to 1000. He pleaded not guilty and was bound over to the April grand jury. The coroner reported multiple skull fractures and other injuries. Funeral services were held at Mount Olive EUB Church in South Perry.
Ralph D. Snyder of Columbus reported his stolen Cadillac after leaving it at Pennsylvania Railroad parking lot between noon and 1 p.m. Monday. The car was found in the Hocking River near Voris Road with plates removed, and a local wrecker service retrieved it hours later.
Columbus Selective Service announces an April induction call of 391 men. The youngest registrant eligible must be 21 on or before April 1, 1956. Last year's April call was 509. The March tally includes Clinton 1 Payette Hocking 2 Pickaway 2 Van Wert.
A Dallas report describes a thief who stole a black rubber item from T G Duncan. The back of the object bears the large white letters POLICE, and officers warn the public to avoid confrontation while they search for the marked man.
Maj. Charlie Anderson of Dayton Ohio commands an eight jet B52 bomber that set an unofficial military speed record by flying from Seattle to Hawaii 2676 miles in four hours 35 minutes at an average 585 mph according to the Air Force.
George Baldridge, 63, farmer and former Adams County sheriff, was granted a stay and released from Ohio Penitentiary after six days of a 120 year sentence for murder. The stay came from the Second District Court of Appeals with counsel E S Young and W S Paxson handling the appeal. Bond was set at 15000 after a 200000 bond had been posted pending trial.
Montgomery prosecutors reveal Rhonda Bell Martin, 49, a waitress, confessed to poisoning her mother, five children, and two husbands with arsenic across years 1937 to 1944. She reportedly had life insurance on victims and naming funds between $3,000 and unspecified sums.
President Eisenhower said he would be happy to have Richard Nixon on any ticket with him but did not endorse Nixon as running mate. He stressed no one should wedge Nixon from him and noted Nixon is a close ally and friend. The remarks followed Nixon’s write‑in NH vote and a prior request for Nixon’s political course. He offered no further comment before the August convention. Cyprus and Israel matters also surfaced in his briefing.
The Ohio Bureau of Unemployment Compensation reports 8 275 new unemployment claims for the week ending March 10 a drop of 1 899 from 10 174 the prior week. Total claims for those employed one week or more rose to 63 273 from the previous period.
