New York County grand jury charges Clifford Irving Edith Irving and Richard Suskind with grand larceny conspiracy forgery in a 25 count indictment tied to the disputed Hughes autobiography. Perjury charges filed against Irving and Suskind in a separate indictment.
Ohio University audit shows Baker Center food service posted a 48106 loss in 1970 71 and warehousing and bid irregularities. Breakage losses reached 76316 over three years with at least 617400 in noncompetitive food purchases. Recommendations call for tighter controls and direct supervision by the director of purchases.
The House approved 272 to 139 to include strong anti busing provisions in a $24 billion higher education bill. Ohio Republicans for include Ashbrook Betts Bow Clancy Devine Harsha Keating Latta Miller Jr Wylie. Against Brown McCulloch Mosher Whalen Jr. Democrats for Hays Stanton. Against Carney Seiberling Stokes Vanik Ludlow Ashley. Not voting Powell Stanton.
Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr. announced the pull of 644 National Guardsmen from Logan County after the Buffalo Creek flood. Civilian forces under the Army Corps of Engineers will take over recovery efforts, with 165 guardsmen remaining. Buffalo Coal Co. cites explosions from a slag heap downstream of the dam as the cause of further blasts.
Ohio legislators consider a governor appointed receiver to take over any mine that might close if a House passed strip mine bill becomes law. Sen. David Holcomb says punitive action could curb a coal company’s plan to shut Southeastern Ohio operations. The action rises amid a busy legislative day with lottery repeal and governance-rule changes advancing.
The Hocking County Drug Council hosts the ninth session of its education series at 8 15 tonight in the extended care unit of Hocking Valley Community Hospital. Films on drug use will be shown and a discussion will follow. The final session on March 16 features a panel including local doctors law enforcement and former addicts with Eric Markus from the Columbus Free Clinic attending. A small turnout was noted last week due to treacherous driving. Shell Johnson and Brent Runge led the session and outlined needed Logan projects and a community action guide.
The Logan Rotary Club announces the 2nd annual Art Festival and Pancake Supper on April 8 at the Logan Armory to benefit Hocking Valley Community Hospital. If proceeds allow, other local charities may receive support. artists should contact Jim Struckman at 385-5308 to reserve display space.

City police investigated two Logan break ins found at Marion Riggs Ford on old Rt. 338 and at the Super Duper Store on W Hunter St. In the Ford case a rear window was broken to access a safe that was unlocked and empty, with two tool boxes missing. In the store case intruders broke the front door glass and took some cigarets.
A one car collision on Rt 93 seven miles south of Logan killed Rocky Bownes age 20 and Douglas Upton age 18. Passenger Thomas Woolever 20 was injured and hospitalized with neck injuries. witnesses cited drinking prior to the ride. Funeral plans set for Bownes and Upton pending burial details.
Profit taking, especially in blue chips, restrained the market today as prices finished mixed. Trading remained active with investors weighing gains and losses across sectors.

Judge Mell G Underwood Sr. 80 former congressman from this district died Wednesday at his New Lexington home after a brief illness. Elected in 1921 as the nations youngest congressman for the old 11th District he later served as Perry County prosecutor and then as U S District Court judge for Southern Ohio. He retired in 1967 and is survived by three sons a daughter a brother 17 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Friday at Roberts Funeral Home with burial in New Lexington cemetery.
The Price Commission keeps the rate freeze on 15 more days awaiting new regulations. Chairman C Jackson Grayson Jr said the extension gives time to implement proposed changes in rules for electric, telephone, telegraph and gas firms, railroads, airlines and other regulated transport.
Forecast calls for cloudy skies and warmer conditions with highs near 50 in the Hocking Valley on Friday. Early today the temperature was 31 under clouds after a low of 10. Wednesday reached 34.
Hocking County youth leaders push a donation drive for the new Junior Fair Building. Ralston Purina of Wellston donates 50 dollars. chairs cost 4.25 and tables 38 each with donor name tags. Youth groups have raised 8018.72 toward a 10000 pledge. Building trustees are Grant Smith Roy Beery and Nolan Sater. A rules list will appear in Friday's Logan Daily News.
