The March 15 sale of war bonds and stamps in city schools totaled 458.25. Junior High led with 163.05 including two 75 bonds, followed by Senior High with 128.50 including a 50 and a 25 bond. East West Central and West schools posted smaller amounts in stamps and bonds.
Carl Poling the county truant officer and Josephine Rush office secretary in the office of County Superintendent S H Dillon were granted two year contracts by the Hocking County Board of Education at its regular Friday night meeting. Poling has served as truant officer for several years. Rush has been the office secretary for three years. Routine business filled the remainder of the meeting.
Logan High School Chieftains, champions of the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League, overwhelmed New Lexington 41 to 18 to reach the district A meet semifinal against Chillicothe in Athens. Kenny Weis led Logan with 12 points as the team built a 22-8 halftime lead and stretched it in the second half.
James R. Smoot county extension agent and Mrs Ruth Bennington county home demonstration agent returned Friday evening from Columbus where they attended the annual district extension conference held at Ohio State University.
London dispatch reports a heavy RAF raid on Essen as part of a tenth straight night of strikes on German or Nazi-held targets. Fourteen bombers failed to return, suggesting about 300 planes took part. Typhoon fighters joined Spitfires on a daylight sweep along the Netherlands coast, sinking two small torpedo boats and injuring others.
County Auditor Kenneth R. Fitzgerald began his second term by taking the oath Saturday at his home despite a severe cold. Common Pleas Judge Phil A. Henderson administered the oath. Fitzgerald, a Republican, is a former Logan mayor who served two terms.
A four motored bomber based at Lockbourne air base near Columbus Ohio is believed grounded somewhere in the wild Arizona New Mexico border area. Col Lowell H Smith commanding officer of Davis Monthan field reported today. He said the ship carrying nine men turned away from the airport Wednesday night because of a low ceiling and last was reported about 50 miles from Phoenix.
Harold Heller, fourteen, was fatally struck by a freight train as he rode under it en route to school in Cincinnati. The accident occurred during the morning hours, and authorities began an investigation.
Washington March 6. Senator Guffey of Pennsylvania suggested no tradition bars a fourth term for President Roosevelt if the people want him. Democratic and Republican senators warned against talking politics now, arguing presidents are judged by deeds and character, not party ambition. Senator Brooks of Illinois framed Guffey’s note as proof some Democrats push politics into the war effort.
Ohio farm land and livestock auction notices rose 72 percent in the past year, report says. A survey of 32 farm newspapers shows notices during August to October climbed from 381 in 1941 to 655 in the same period last year. Factors cited include labor shortages and retirements amid high prices.

Blythe California dispatch reports Second Lt. Ralph Eugene Majors age 23 of Canton and four other airmen were killed when their bomber crashed near San Francisco Peak close to Flagstaff Arizona. The Army public relations office at Blythe confirmed the loss.

Parma police say a 14 year-old boy confessed to setting Parma Junior High School ablaze to destroy evidence of poor grades, implicating two other youths. The blaze caused about $15 000 in damage and the youth will be charged in juvenile court for arson.
Sept. H. C. Dieterich of Bexley Schools announced he would retire July 31 due to ill health. He has served as superintendent in the Columbus suburb for 19 years.
