The U S unemployment rate slipped to 7.6 percent in February, a fourth straight monthly decline as employment rose toward pre recession levels. White House officials anticipate continued easing though some months may level off.
US officials say Cuba plans to assist Rhodesian nationalists seeking to overthrow Ian Smith by sending military advisers and training officers, following Cuban successes in Angola. The move signals widening Cold War tensions as Havana expands support to anti‑settler regimes.
A jury trial is scheduled in Hocking County Common Pleas Court for an alienation of affections suit filed by Alice E. Barkhurst against Mary Ann Kemper. Barkhurst seeks 30000 dollars in compensatory damages and 10000 dollars in punitive damages alleging her husband George N. Barkhurst was drawn to Kemper by wrongful acts. The Logan Area Chamber of Commerce discusses a 6 to 9 p.m. March 17 downtown sale and a May 14-16 statewide spring campout at Hocking County Fairgrounds. Up to 1,000 camping units are expected, bringing 2,500 to 3,000 visitors. The Daily News will run a recreation edition detailing camp sites and attractions to boost Logan and Hocking County tourism.

Athens lawyer Franklin Sheeter announced his candidacy for judge of the Fourth District Court of Appeals to succeed retiring Judge Gordon Gray. A Republican, Sheeter has served as Athens County Municipal Court judge and held positions with the Ohio Municipal Judges Association and state bar groups. The race covers 15 southern Ohio counties including Hocking and Meigs. He and his wife Nina have four children and live on a farm near Athens.
