In Irving Texas pupils walkout over teacher strike. School board fired Superintendent John Beard, prompting protests and substitute teachers filling in. Police guard the campus as buses run and a temporary lunchroom operates amid tension.
In Taipei talks between Nationalists and the United States amid press speculation Chiang Kai-shek may pull garrisons from Matsu Island. Discussions included a possible joint nationalist US defense command to protect Formosa and the Pescadores with U S aid and mutual defense under the treaty.
Cleveland police and FBI arrested Army Sergeant M. Roney in Cuyahoga Falls on Feb. 2 warrant. He allegedly threatened three friends of his estranged wife in a letter if she did not accept his divorce terms. He was held in Cuyahoga County jail after an unplanned visit to the home. A roomer was allegedly forced with a pistol to compel the wife’s return.
Cleveland police report Ezio Hudsteth, 22, a barmaid, shot James Fleming, 22, in an east side tavern last night as he allegedly climbed over the bar. The death is under investigation and the motive remains unclear.
Early March storms clashed with cold air, bringing floods and frost across the Midwest and Northeast. The Ohio River swelled in Wheeling and Pittsburgh as heavy rain, hail, and tornadoes caused damage and evacuations, with several states reporting dangerous conditions and several creeks drowning in Kentucky.
Two large CIO unions combined in Cleveland, uniting the Oil Workers International Union and the United Gas Coke and Chemical Workers Union. The Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union will have about 200,000 members with O A Knight as first president and Elwood D Swisher elected vice president.
The LHS faculty cagers defeated the Kiwanis Club 29-14 before a good crowd in the LHS auditorium. Kiwanis used a platoon system. coach Mac Watson faced referees for tactics and a white-shirted impostor was briefly sent in. Lee O’Brien led the faculty with six points, followed by Robert Morris with five. Alfred Carpenter scored eight for Kiwanis. In the preliminary, Bob Rainier led Hi-to with 15 points in a 33-26 win over the Loafers.
Athens officials say they will charge Frank Oiler 32 in Municipal Court on Monday. Oiler admitted firing at Chauncey Walker after Walker found him asleep in a stolen car, police report shows. Walker is a sheriff’s target in the case tied to a Moundsville penitentiary parole violation.
Coroner Samuel R. Gerber ordered autopsies on three apparently healthy babies who died in Cleveland. He warned of an outside chance the deaths are related to the same virus suspected in the earlier death of Miss Ann Moritz, 21, daughter of Dr. Alan Moritz, a leading authority on legal medicine.

Officials predicted overflow around 3 pm and canceled the Water Over the Dam contest with winners to be announced if overflow occurs.
