Severe winter and higher jobseekers pushed unemployment to 7.5 percent in February from 7.3 percent in January. The Labor Department cites energy shortages and production cuts for more part time work while the labor force rose 630,000 to 96.1 million. Total employment grew to 89 million, up 400,000 for February, with 7.2 million unemployed.
Mayor Violet Hollenbaugh learned HUD approved a 200000 pre-application for Nelsonville water plant improvements. A 600000 full grant was deemed unlikely, so a priority list will guide essential upgrades. Final Columbus submission is due Monday with Director Tom Wilkinson.
Ohio and the East may see a warmer summer and fewer storms if winter deficits are made up. Meteorologist Marvin Miller notes a likely warmer summer and fall based on climatology, while deputy director Fred Ostby cautions there is no proven link. Ohio Tornado tally steady, 1976 totals 10 with 44 deaths nationwide.

An estimated 5 to 6 million attempts are expected with about 1 200 calls per hour reaching CBS operators and only 35 to 40 people speaking with the president or moderator Walter Cronkite.
Three men Tim Bookman Hershel D Phillips and Ralph Thompson all of Logan were placed on two years probation by Judge James Stilwell after pleading guilty to breaking and entering a cabin on Big Pine Road on Oct. 13 1976. They must pay court costs within six months.
Three members of Boy Scout 99 will receive the Eagle Scout award during a Court of Honor at 3 p.m. Sunday at Immanuel United Methodist Church. Don Griggs, Greg Geiger and Gary Chapman will receive the highest rank in scouting. Don and Greg are sophomores, Gary is a Logan High School senior.
Alan J. Porter a 27 year old of Toledo was held to the grand jury in Hocking County Court on a charge of aggravated burglary. He allegedly entered Keith Lowery s mobile home at South Bloomingville February 13 with intent to steal and to threaten Lowery. Porter was represented by Rodger W. McNaughton of Lancaster.
Washington details show Congress moving to a 17.5 billion dollar stimulus framework with possible tax cuts and spending limits. Leaders in Senate and House vote to allow options though rebate timing remains unclear and could reach taxpayers by late June. Senator Glenn seeks 13.5 million to fund a federal vehicle test facility at Ohio Transportation Research Center. Oaxaca unrest ends after 10 days of clashes leaving at least 16 dead.
The leaning tipple at the junction of U S 33 Ohio 595 and Haydenville Rd collapsed today shortly after 6 45 a m. The eyesore and possible safety hazard had drawn complaints while the structure once served the Hocking coal industry.
A Gallipolis Ohio fire killed a 20 year old mother Phyllis Ann Owens and her two children Ronnie four and Valerie fourteen months. The blaze caused about 10000 dollars in damage to their home.
Judge Fred Murray announces a new minor violations bureau in Hocking County Court for fines under 100 dollars. The system will let offenders pay before court dates once fine schedules from state divisions are obtained. The traffic bureau is already functioning well and dog warden citation forms are at the printers.
