Juvenile reform bill stalls in Senate committee
In Columbus the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee did not take up a bill ending the five month minimum commitment for youths at the Ohio Youth Commission due to opposition from Cuyahoga County juvenile court judges. Chair Max H. Dennis postponed vote awaiting a Wednesday meeting with absent members. The panel plans to send the bill to the floor with a recommendation for passage. Also on the agenda the committee backed a measure to let voters decide on abolishing the death penalty with amendments to allow it for murder of a governor, lieutenant governor, or cop. The Fraternal Order of Police opposed the royal hear. Separately the Senate approved 29 to 1 a bill making parents liable for up to 2000 dollars if their under eighteen children commit willful and malicious assault. Senator Nye of Akron opposed both the parents liability bill and previous related measure.
