Gov. Martin L. Davey may ask the Legislature to appropriate 2 million dollars to supplement a 3 million dollar temporary relief fund if cities and counties agree to levy local taxes for matching state grants after April 15. The House advanced numerous bills as the Senate considered tax and school aid issues, including parochial school funding debates and local government finance measures.
Torrance Cannon, who escaped from an Ohio Penitentiary honor camp 15 years ago, was being returned to resume a one to 15 year sentence for an Akron robbery, hoping Gov. Martin L. Davey would grant a pardon. Cannon, identified in Pittsburgh last week as an escaped convict, decided yesterday to waive extradition and return to Columbus.
Preliminary drilling on a well for Joe Thomas of Logan by J. W. Wal smith yielded a good show of oil last night. The Salem Hollow site near Murray City is to be completed today.
A Securities and Exchange Commission probe in Washington traces Harrison Williams's path from a $2,072,000 original investment to securities valued at $612,000,000 by 1929. He built a $730,000,000 utility empire, centered on the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. His wife is famed as the best-dressed woman in the world.
In Chicago on March 3 AP reports Mrs Nellie Brooke Stull national president of the Widows and Widowers Club says the group will stage a sit-down strike on April 1 against men with no serious matrimonial intent The slogan centers on no more free home cooked meals She founded the organization 17 years ago noting that today men need jobs and so do women as she humorously chose April Fool's Day for the action Women widows with homes are said to have often cooked for male friends under the guise of hospitality.
Seven men died and three were seriously injured in a rockslide at the Polson Dam early today in Montana. The deceased include Tony Adams Evaro Henry Coulture Joe St Germaine Clifford Gendron Dave Sanchez Jack Anderson and Charles Ross.
The House approved a resolution endorsing President Roosevelt's federal court reorganization 78 to 38, with five Democrats joining 33 Republicans against it. Twenty-two majority members did not vote as Republicans abstained from debate led by Rep. Gus Kasch. The measure now faces an uncertain Senate fate amid disputes over legislative authority.
Howard Magnussen, 26, charged in the death of 4 year old Joan Morvan. George Morvan and Norma Gatto, living with him, booked on felonious incident and improper guardianship. Queens detectives investigated after an autopsy described the child’s injuries as brutal and serious.
Art Williams located Joseph G. Le Van, missing United States explorer-psychologist, in an Indian settlement about 300 miles from Georgetown. Le Van, who was sought since February 19, was studying psychological aspects of aboriginal life.
Homer Lawson of Logan, drunk, fought Harry Burnett the sign painter in Warner's beer parlor on Main Street. Burnett knocked Lawson down. Lawson broke his left leg after a phone call to Police Chief Reynolds. Lawson walked to Dr. Shank’s office, then to the Veterans Hospital in Dayton.
The Ohio House Welfare Committee demanded Welfare Director Margaret Allman provide by March 11 details on working conditions hours and wages of state welfare institution employees. Chairman Richard Marlow warned a subpoena or contempt citation could follow if she refuses. Rep Beatty had earlier requested the data in a February 19 letter.
A chloroform can, found near the University of Virginia campus, is key to solving the death of Cleo Sprouse a brunette high school junior. Sheriff J Mason Smith said the can identified by a Charlottesville druggist as a type he sold. The bottle lay upside down with saturated cotton at the mouth and nostrils. Two university students discovered Sprouse’s body between the college golf course and the cemetery.
Col. R G Powell U S district engineer released estimates for flood control along the Ohio river covering about 50 communities. Costs range from 17 213 000 for greater Cincinnati to 45000 for Elgin Illinois with a total program cost unofficially put at 574 556 000. The plan would build 88 reservoirs in the Ohio Valley including about 15 currently under construction with the Muskingum Conservancy System.
A light-haired blue-eyed infant, about five months old, was found on the steps of S. M. Heller Memorial Hospital in Napoleon Ohio. The baby was laid in a basket with a milk bottle and water nearby. Police investigated with no immediate clues about the baby's parents or origin.
Bane Ernst age 34 was hanged today for firing a death bullet through a window last October at his love triangle rival George Pogmore authorities report in Fort Saskatchewan Alberta. The case drew local attention as the presiding officials carried out the sentence under provincial law.
Samuel Rosoff, a wealthy New York subway contractor, issues a formal denial of involvement in the death of Norman Redwood, a Teaneck labor leader killed outside his home. Prosecutor John Breslin Jr. alleged a conspiracy with Joseph Fay to murder Redwood and threatened retaliation against a man deemed incorruptible.
Washington March 3 AP Some supporters of President Roosevelt linked his push for wage and hour laws to his bid to reorganize the supreme court after it struck down the NRA. The president said such labor standards should be enacted this session but not in a must class, and reporters were asked to drop that term. He had sent to Congress a presidential committee report on NRA successes and failures, shifting focus from the court issue.
A man identified as Vogel from Logan was treated at Lancaster Hospital after leg injuries sustained while unloading lumber in the Lancaster railroad yards. The man’s name does not appear in the Logan directory.
Alfred Blackman, the Negro servant who found writer Humphrey Fearson dead and his wife sobbing, repeated his account in jail as a material witness. District Attorney Earl Redwine ordered him detained overnight. Mrs Pearson visited the mortuary. hospital statements and inquest testimony differ on key points.
Mrs Jack Spence is reported seriously ill today at her home on E Hunter Street. Her condition is being watched by local family and medical staff with no further details released.
The steel workers organizing committee hailed a new contract with Carnegie-Illinois Steel as historic, recognizing the union as bargaining agent for 120,000 AAIS&T workers. A 10 cent hourly raise creates a $5 minimum, with time and a half for over eight hours. A joint panel will settle details by March 10, and the pact runs until Feb 28, 1938.
Ohio steel firms announced wage increases and settlements amid sitdowns by workers in Toledo and Cleveland. About 43,000 Ohio steel workers will gain from new raises at American Steel and Wire in Cleveland and Timken Roller Bearing in Canton, with 1.5 million dollars yearly extra for 8,500 Timken workers effective March 1.
Walter Starr aged 40 of Gore suffered severe burns to his face eyes and hands in a powder explosion at a coal truck mine just south of Gore. He received treatment at Logan by Dr. Victor Simiele and was later admitted to Grant Hospital in Columbus.
James Burkhart, 25, of Pandora, was found dead with a pocket knife wound in McKitrick Memorial Hospital in Kenton. Coroner Kenneth W. Preston ruled death by his own action. Burkhart had been hospitalized since October 4 for serious leg injuries from a motorcycle crash.
Southeastern Ohio Class B sectional tournament opens at Logan High School gym tonight with three games Shawnee vs Glouster Hamden vs Oak Hill Middleport vs Mercerville. Four games scheduled Thursday and Friday nights, two semifinals Saturday afternoon, finals and consolation Saturday night. Local interest centers on Middleport Mercerville with 15 teams overall. Winner advances to Columbus for state meet. Laurelville visits Ames Berne tomorrow night after Athens County tourney winner.
Mrs. O. O. Stephenson, long noted resident of the community, has shown improvement after several weeks of illness at her home on Front Street. Friends report she is resting comfortably and responding to treatment.
