Oil engineer Norman Rees tied to espionage case dies at home
In Southbury Connecticut Norman John Rees 69 a Mobil Oil Co retired engineer is reported to have admitted taking industry information for the Soviets and to have acted as an FBI double agent in 1971. He was found shot dead by his wife with a .38 revolver. Police treat death as apparent self inflicted and the Times Herald of Dallas published the espionage story earlier that day. His son and neighbors expressed shock at the allegations and mystery over who exposed his past.

U S Closes Camp Samae San as Base Withdrawals Continue

Brush Fires Rush Through Perry and Surrounding Areas
Laurelville and Good Hope Two fire departments battled grass and brush fires Sunday and Saturday in Hocking County. In Perry area the fire consumed over 100 acres near Sam Carr Rd aided by Forestry Division and several departments. Damage modest. winds and smoke hampered crews. Additional fires off Buena Vista Rd and Ohio 678 burned small areas with mutual aid from Berne Union and Logan departments. Fire crews worked hours to contain outbreaks and protect homes as Forestry personnel continued monitoring Monday morning.

Police sting nets 100 arrests in Washington fencing case
A police and FBI sting operation named The Sting hid as a warehouse fencing ring. More than 100 people were arrested including 60 at a party for the operation and a U.S. attorney was charged with bribery. Loot valued at 2.4 million dollars included HUD checks and numerous stolen items.
