Roosevelt pushes a wealth tax as part of the nuisance tax bill while delaying full adoption until after a Senate debate. A rough draft proposes higher surtaxes, new inheritance and gift taxes, and corporate levies, with two days of hearings.
Congress today moved to debate a ship subsidy bill as Senate and House negotiators discussed a Wagner labor measure. The Finance Committee studied a tax the wealthy proposal while the chamber advanced the subsidy legislation toward passage.
The St Paul police purge, led by editor Howard Kahn, dismissed Police Chief Michael Culligan and four other officers amid allegations of a secret alliance between the police department and the underworld.

Rev Ralph J Westlake of South Charleston Ohio failed to appear in Brookline Massachusetts district court to answer drunkenness and drunken driving charges. Judge Philip S Parker denied his request to dismiss the case and ordered the pending charges to be addressed after the clergyman sent a telegram from Niagara Falls New York asking to pay the fine and release the balance.
President Roosevelt unveiled a National Youth Administration under the Works Progress Administration with a $50,000,000 appropriation. The plan aims to place unemployed youth in apprenticeships, school, and jobs, with 16 to 25 year olds eligible. Key leaders include Josephine Roche and Aubrey Williams.
A 24 year old man claiming to be Austin Johnson of Dallas Texas is held by Marion police as a suspect in a Bellefontaine filling station holdup yesterday. Attendant Kenneth Stubbs was struck with a wrench and knocked unconscious. Stubbs will view the suspect for identification today as two men allegedly staged the holdup.
A 17 year old, William Livings tone, drowned in a gravel pit here yesterday while attempting to learn swimming. The death occurred in Columbus, Colorado.
In Chicago a 160 acre land dispute worth about $800 million returns to circuit court as Herman Kreuding seeks to reopen a 23 year fight for possession and income from properties once linked to Cap'n John Streeter and the Johnson heirs. He argues title passed to him through an aunt.
Curtis R. Hay reports that state direct taxes averaged $1.25 per person per month for Jan 1 to Jun 1 1935 across 39 states. Car owners paid about 7.5 cents daily in gas, license and related taxes amounting to $298,840,895 in five months.
Rollin B. Harrington about 40 formerly of Logan died of septicemia from a carbuncle at his Wichita Kansas home. He will be buried in Logan after services at First Presbyterian church Friday at 10 30 with Rev R C Babylon likely in charge. He left a widow two children and his mother in Columbus plus two sisters in Newark and Washington DC. He had oil and gas work in Wichita after World War I and served as a second lieutenant in World War I. Burial by Woodard Funeral Service in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Norwalk Ohio June 21 AP Police questioned a 45 year old man in the slaying of Mrs Katharine Wilde a 67 year old widow Found on her bed by granddaughter Georgia Jane Whipple The coroner ruled murder noting nine broken ribs and facial bruising Robbery not believed the motive though the house was ransacked A concrete block was found under a back window Police say the widow had been dead about fifteen hours
Lester Redding, state recon supervising HOLC, reports 3 100 positions may be created in Ohio over three months if 8 000 Home Owners' Loan Corp contracts proceed. The figure reflects HOLC work under consideration at 3100 Columbus C. June 26 AP.
Angelo Herndon, facing 18 to 20 years on a Georgia chain gang, was granted a rehearing after the U S Supreme Court recently affirmed his sentence. He was arrested in Atlanta for urging workers to strike and was convicted under an antiquated law of inciting insurrection.
In Tacoma and Portland police and National Guard mobilized as plans to reopen mills moved forward after the Portland union rejected a wage settlement. About 700 workers returned to six Tacoma mills under guard, while some operators sought more staff and riot control teams patrolled the streets.
In Fostoria Ohio on June 26 a deputy sheriff fired a tear gas bomb into a crowd at the jail area after two men who tried to address a labor mass meeting were arrested. About 250 citizens aided by Sheriff Verne Deats turned back a party of men believed to be labor agitators riding in seven cars from Cleveland. The arrested men, held on suspicion, were to be released today authorities said. The incident followed reports they urged plant workers at the National Carbon Company to back the strike at its Cleveland plant.
