Parolee Captured After Shootout At Rt. 938 Roadblock

A 29 year old Lancaster man, Boyd G Browning, was wounded after opening fire on Hocking County deputies at a Rt 93 roadblock near Logan. Browning, armed with a .38 pistol, fled to a bank and surrendered after deputies returned fire. His wife and two children were treated for injuries from shattered glass. Browning faces multiple charges and is held without bond as a parole violator.

Convoy Breaks Through to Besieged Ben Het Camp

U S forces report a supply convoy reached the Ben Het Special Forces camp from Dak To despite heavy daily shelling. South Vietnamese and U S artillery claimed success against a North Vietnamese force surrounding the camp as fighting continued. An extra inch of rain fell overnight in the Logan area. It was 75 degrees under overcast skies at 11 a.m. after a low of 65. Mondays high reached 83. Weather outlook calls for cloudy warm conditions with a chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday.

Libby Lewis Appeal Hearing Postponed On Vacation

A jurisdictional hearing before the Ohio Supreme Court on Libby Lewis appeal was postponed as two defense attorneys are on vacation. Lewis was convicted last summer for conspiracy to defraud. The hearing will be rescheduled after counsel return. Circuit Judge Ammer is a candidate for U.S. district attorney with support from Columbus and Portsmouth lawmakers.

Tucson AP reports former newspaper columnist Westbrook Pegler died in Tucson, Arizona, early this morning. The noted writer known for his controversial syndicated columns passed away in his sleep. Pegler had a long career shaping mid century opinion journalism.

Nelsonville Elks Lodge Destroyed In Two Hour Blaze

Fire of undetermined origin razed the Nelsonville Elks Lodge at Hocking and Fayette Streets two-story building. Damage estimated over 300000. Brick walls remained. first floor housed Fritz's Barber Shop and Elks dining room. second floor held a recreation room ballroom and bar. Fire discovered at 3 40 am by three visiting youths. nearby Ethel Matheny noted smoke earlier. Logan and Nelsonville firemen used ladder trucks to prevent spread to Ethel's Tea Room. Nine firefighters and two departments assisted.
