Truman summoned National Labor Relations Board members to discuss implementing the Taft Hartley Act. The act shifts duties to the agency, seeks funding boosts, and faces Senate and House efforts to raise or adjust appropriations.
An 18 year old youth who gave his name as Donald Myers of St Marys Route 2 was held today in city prison for Van Wert police as an auto theft suspect. He was arrested by Logan police in a car parked on U S Route 33 south of Logan. The eg numerals matched the reported stolen vehicle from Van Wert. Van Wert police were notified by Police Chief Sol Ellinger.
Toledo report from June 24 notes urban representation plans in the Ohio House as the Ohio Council of Cities, formed in Cincinnati earlier this month, starts its campaign to boost city clout in the state legislature.

Washington June 24. Chairman Weichel says six tankers on the U S west coast used by the Soviet Union were built in the United States during the war for the U S government. One voyage carried 123,895 gallons of gasoline and 12,500 barrels of oil from California. Three more ships are loading in California and may depart before export controls end June 30. The Amtorg Trading Corp. bought the oil. though bearing Russian names and flags, the ships were formerly U S built with U S names.
Mrs. Mary Ann Barrett aged 57 was killed when her bicycle was struck by a truck in Shaker Heights near Cleveland. The incident occurred yesterday, authorities said.
The Senate civil service committee approved 131 postmaster nominations and sent them to the Senate for confirmation. Chairman Langer urged a formal inquiry into political considerations in appointments as more than 800 nominations remain stalled. Ohio had no nominees in the first batch this year.
China renewed charges of direct Soviet military aid to Chinese Communists as a June 30 deadline neared for a U S loan request of 250 million dollars. Gen Chen Cung said the Manchuria front was critical and that at least 31 Russian advisers were with Chinese Reds at Szepingkai, a key rail center.
Gov. Thomas J. Herbert reiterates a hands-off policy on reported slot machines at Indian Lake Logan County after an editorial accuses local officials of inaction. He defends local police powers saying they enforce statutes and that state power is not unlimited. A Springfield News Sun editorial claimed machines doubled over the weekend with 76 machines counted. Local officials including Sheriff Ellsworth Palmer and village marshal’s wife were cited in reports.
In Wilmington California workers comb through hot debris for more bodies after a tanker explosion. Four recovered and nine still missing from the Mar Kay incident that split the ship and damaged nearby docks, igniting a long blaze.
Cincinnati report notes Dr. Paul Popenoe, director of the American Institute of Family Relations, argues women are biologically more childlike than men in body and health. He says women should value youthfulness but not remain childish, and cites male aggressiveness and egotism as key differences in behavior between the sexes.
Washington June 24. Soft coal industry representatives estimate at least half of the nation’s bituminous miners are idle. They fear the work stoppage could expand into a national coal strike as Taft Hartley law prompts protests. John L. Lewis’ miners plan a 10 day vacation ending July 7, with government coal runs uncertain. Navy Captain Collisson admits widespread idleness and limited reporting. United Mine Workers headquarters offered no comment.
Charles R. Click state commander of the Disabled Veterans of America will accompany State Senator Albert L. Daniels to Logan Thursday to speak at Hocking County Chapter 68, DAV. The 8 PM meeting in Maccabee Hall invites all area veterans. Topics include claims, compensation, hospitalization and other subjects. Senator Daniels will install new chapter officers.
The Distilled Spirits Institute reported Americans drank 30 percent less whisky gin rum and brandy in the first four months of this year than in 1946. The drop is attributed to consumer resistance to prices not substantially reduced since the war.
In Rome on June 24 Italy faced a wave of strikes protests against bandit attacks on Communist headquarters in Sicily over the weekend. Workers organized scattered actions across cities amid tensions with authorities and calls for security measures.
The House approved and sent to President Truman a deficiency appropriation bill totaling 72,236,257 dollars with 12,000,000 dollars allocated for emergency flood control work.
Flood crests roll down swollen midwestern rivers forcing large scale evacuations in Nebraska Iowa and Missouri. Drownings toll rises with 16 deaths in Nebraska and flooding spreads to Agency and Pattonsburg as bridges levees and highways are disrupted.
Boston report says a 15 year old boy Edward Bancroft, five feet one inch, 98 pounds, faced two patrol officers on a school yard incident. He allegedly fired at officers, dragged a youth as a human shield, wounded a patrolman slightly, and resisted until clubbed into submission by a pursuing officer.
In Lapeer Michigan on June 24 a sixteen year old boy Oliver Ter pening Jr pleaded guilty to first degree murder in a flower patch thrill slaying of four neighbor children. Circuit Judge George W Des jardins imposed the mandatory life sentence after the guilty plea and a sanity finding at a public hearing.
Grover W. Fleming, 64, publisher of the weekly American Examiner, was sentenced in Clark County Common Pleas Court to three months in county jail and fined 300 plus costs after pleading guilty to circulating lewd and lascivious articles. He has already spent 94 days in jail since March 22.
Standard Oil Company Indiana announced a summer rationing plan across 12 of 15 states due to mounting gasoline sales. Supply will be equitably distributed among retailers who will determine the sharing method with customers, aiming to match last year’s total deliveries while noting a 15 percent rise in sales over 1946.
Richard Gearheiser a 60 year old Waldo farmer was found dead last night in Marion after apparently being dragged 700 feet by a tractor plow. The body was discovered under the machine with authorities treating it as a fatal accident.
Miners in eastern Ohio down tools over Taft-Hartley passage with President Truman's veto. At least 20 mines in the Hocking Valley and about 2,000 workers in the Athens area halted operations. Several mines reported closed across Corning and surrounding towns as officials warned the union stance could push more closures before the June contract end and July 7 deadline.

Ex GI John Snediker of Akron and his French wife Janine Anseume and their eight month old son Jon found temporary shelter with the Salvation Army in Columbus as they sought housekeeping rooms amid a housing shortage. Snediker aims to attend Ohio State University after graduating from Akron Garfield High School. He met Janine in Paris where she served as a second lieutenant with the French air force. they married January 2, 1946. The family arrived in Columbus yesterday with the same jeep used during Army service in Europe.
