At Fort Riley a veteran sergeant shot and killed two officers after ducking drill and taking an M1 rifle for punishment. Sgt. Paul A. Barrier, 29, surrendered to the provost marshal and was sent for a mental examination. Victims were 2nd Lt. Jerry Humphrey, 22, and M. Sgt. Ralph H. Stilson, 29.
An unattended car rolled from an adjacent alley and crashed into the Federoff antique shop on McAr thers East Main Street. Antique dishes and other items were broken and property damaged. The vehicle, owned by Viola M Eisnicher, was left parked while she retrieved feed, then rolled across Main Street into the building.
A fiery two truck collision near Fayetteville North Carolina killed 19 people, tying the nation’s worst truck crash. Thirteen died at the scene and six more died in hospitals as officials worked to identify five victims who survivors knew only by nicknames or initials.
Five teenagers died when their car left a highway near McKeesport Pennsylvania Thursday night. The 16 year old driver Bruce Wessel and another passenger survived after the car plunged a 50 foot embankment and struck three trees. The top of the car was sheared away and all seven occupants were thrown out.
