Leon Degrelle, long-time leader of Belgiums Fascist Rex party, has been released from a prison in the French Pyrenees and is believed on his way to Belgium to head a new pro German government following his release.
A Camden factory explosion and fires killed two people and left four women and three men missing. More than 200 injured from heat or smoke. four in hospitals critical. An emergency was declared as volunteers cared for families made homeless and the blaze was brought under control hours later.
Ed Staff ranks Hocking County Court House offices by heat and coolness. Recorder Herman Bratton’s second floor office is coolest under shade and breeze, Elections office close, Basement clerk George Bolden the coolest in function but excluded. Hottest spots include Judge Phil Henderson’s third floor corner, with Clerk Don Feather and Sheriff Joe Farbearn near top.
The House Appropriations Committee recommended nearly five billion dollars for a two ocean navy and a potentially 2,000,000 man army on combat status. The total defense spending would reach 10.04 billion with the new appropriations and contract authorizations.

Hundreds of residents in Hocking County witnessed a brilliant white meteor drift from south to north after 9 PM lighting the treetops and leaving a fiery trail. Dozens of smaller meteorites followed, with observers noting the main meteor's size varied around a Victrola record.

Logan residents rested Tuesday under cooler air as showers moved through Hocking County. After a 102 degree noon reading, the temperature fell to 76 by 7 pm and reached 86 at noon the next day. Forecasters warned the relief might be temporary with more rain possible in several regions.

Tilghman Kinney a 39 year old farmer collapsed and died from heat while working in a field in McConnellville C on July 31 AP reported the incident noting the victim's age and cause of death in the rural area.
Robert Nixon of Bainbridge Ross County, noted as the first 1940 heat victim, died today in a Chillicothe hospital AP reports.
A. F. Risch of near Rockbridge reported seeing a full sized deer on his farm on Thursday evening. Ed Dupler and William Risch also saw the animal which crossed a field and headed into a woods about fifty yards from them. No attempt to capture the deer.
Twenty one American republics formed a united front at Havana signing the Act of Havana and supplementary accords. Argentina Chile Colombia Uruguay and Venezuela demanded ratification before participation while Mexico Bolivia and Peru reserved on other points. The program calls for opposition to non American transfers and strengthened Inter American cooperation.
Italian forces are reported moving toward the German held coastline to join blitzkrieg veterans for an expected attack on England. Contained warnings from Fascist editors about a prolonged campaign of attrition and air attacks, with reports of intensified German troop movements and potential Italian participation.

Film actor Richard Greene aged 23 goes to Vancouver to volunteer as a private in the Canadian army or service in the British Isles. His mother Mrs Kathleen Gerrard works in war relief in Victoria British Columbia. Greene is pictured packing in Hollywood.
The Ohio Supreme Court was asked to grant relief to former Athens County commissioners Ira Whitmore and Walter MacCombs who were convicted of accepting bribes. Mrs. Minnie Whitmore filed a habeas corpus claim alleging improper trial by Common Pleas Judge Clifford L. Belt who was absent during testimony. The prisoners face one to ten year sentences.
Eight juvenile inmates at Hamilton County Court House detention escaped after seizing a guard’s keys and opening doors. Police searched for the eight offenders as 24 others initially eligible for release did not act. The escape occurred late last night and eight were sought.
