D Y Milne, a local sportsman, fished Lake Alma with a large chub bait. A 19 inch two pound catfish struck and tore off the chub tail then chunks from the body before embedding the hook in its mouth on the final bite.
The Associated Press reports 23 deaths from auto accidents in Ohio during the weekend. Seven victims occurred in Fremont area crashes involving three cars and a truck, including Charles Bookman of Detroit. Other deaths spanned Cleveland, Mansfield, Lakewood, Chicago, Winnipeg, and various towns, with pedestrians and a nurse among the victims.
The Federal Trade Commission announced a complaint against twelve corporations and individuals in Wisconsin Ohio West Virginia and Indiana for combining to suppress competition in the Milwaukee glassware trade area. New York July 31 AP reports Death's hired man Robert G Elliott, executioner for six eastern states, is critically ill and a substitute may be needed for three scheduled executions in August. Elliott, 65, has overseen more than 300 executions in 13 years, earning about 150 dollars per job.
C A Hartley, 83, longtime newspaper man and veteran of the Spanish American War, died today in Pomeroy Ohio. He served in journalism for many years and was well known in the local press community.
Charles Allen, a wealthy farmer from Cynthiana, was taken to Lexington jail for temporary safekeeping after a Saturday night siege that left six wounded. He admitted firing three shots, saying he acted during the incident that killed George M. Dickey, 77, the Cynthiana police chief, who was shot in the back as he stepped from a patrol car. Allen sought protection before surrender. A posse arrested him at his brother’s Jacksonville home.
