Washington reports outline possible Republican responses to President Truman's demand for inflation controls. Plans include restoring installment buying limits with one third down payments and 15 month credit, and freezing up to 12 billion dollars in bank requirements.
City Solicitor Thompson ruled that councilman George L Koerner forfeited his seat by becoming master mechanic at Athens State Hospital. Ohio statutes bar councilmen from holding other public office or employment.
Robert M. Daniels pleaded guilty to the triple slaying of the Niebel family in Mansfield Ohio. He admitted kidnapping and murdering John Niebel and his wife Noranda and daughter Phyllis. A special grand jury may indict him next week with trial planned for September.
Western Berlin residents rejected a Soviet offer to feed the city as new Russian attacks on the anti communist city government continued. Informants in Moscow said a Big Four Berlin session could be held in Paris in September if envoy talks proceed. Russians charged grain was hidden in Berlin barge harbors but American officials denied hindrances to food and dismissed the claim as propaganda.
Temperatures are expected to average 2-4 degrees above normal with normal highs of 84 in the west and 78 in the east, and normal lows of 62 west and 58 east. Cooler Saturday, warmer Monday, then cooler Wednesday. Precipitation around a quarter to a half inch with scattered showers or thundershowers Tuesday.
Daniel Edward Beougher 86 of Logan Route 4 died at 1 05 AM after two months of ill health. A native of Hocking County he lived in Maxville Perry County most of his life where he operated a farm. Funeral services are set for 2 30 PM Sunday at Webb's Chapel Methodist Church with burial at Fairview Cemetery Leonard Funeral Service. Surviving are a son Roy two daughters Mrs Lara Wolfe Mrs Charles Wolfe and Mrs Alta Angle two brothers Charles and Will and three sisters Miss Effie Beougher Mrs Sarah Bray and Mrs Maude Schein.
Wheat easy with weak support, corn prospects bright and oats lower with corn. Hogs active up to 31.00, cattle steady to 41.00, stocks down across groups, bonds lower with rail declines.
Dayton officials told Gov. Herbert the Univis Co. plant turmoil had subsided with no immediate need for troops. Police and deputy sheriffs reinforced, 217 workers entered the plant under protection as pickets clashed with employees amid tear gas and scattered arrests. Schooling plans shifted with the plant closed Friday through Sunday.
Carl E. Blosser, relief director and Republican chairman, reportedly named manager of the Hocking County office of the Division of Aid for the Aged. He denied the report saying he had heard nothing. A resignation as relief director may be submitted to the Board of County Commissioners next Friday. Frank Murphy of Murray City currently manages the Aid for the Aged office.
Hamilton Ohio July 30 The joint first degree murder trial of Mrs Marie Conn Abbott and farmhand Cyril Gordon nears a verdict as closing statements finish. They are charged in the fatal beating of Morris R Abbott a 44 year old Reily Township farmer. Abbott admitted an affair with Gordon but denied planning the May 31 death. Gordon admitted striking the blows with a mattock during an argument over divorce.
Ohio will increase monthly pensions for old age recipients and the needy blind by five dollars starting October 1. Gov Thomas J Herbert signed two bills raising maximum payments to the blind and aged from fifty to fifty five dollars a month. Two tax measures remain unsigned awaiting his signature with expected action Saturday.
In Budapest on July 30 President Zoltan Tildy abdicated as the communist dominated government accused his son in law Victor Csornoky minister to Egypt of espionage and treason. Csornoky is under arrest after resigning yesterday following his return from Cairo.
Logan and Hocking counties endured a heat wave as readings reached 92 degrees by noon. State observers predicted the temperature would climb higher into the afternoon after a 64 degree morning low.
Health Commissioner Carl A. Wilzbach opened tests to confirm if Joseph Horn, 65, died from smallpox amid a prior five smallpox cases in Cincinnati over the last 15 years. Horn died yesterday after illness diagnosed tentatively as smallpox.
