Nixon, accepting the Republican nomination, vowed victory of freedom over tyranny and plenty over hunger worldwide. He framed the race against Kennedy as a historic campaign, outlined a heavy travel schedule, and stressed leading efforts to fight global poverty and disease.
In a keynote speech Nixon asserts his belief in the American dream from his life experience, warns of threats, and attacks the Democratic platform. He praises Henry Cabot Lodge for VP and contrasts his views with Kennedy Johnson ticket.
President Eisenhower says Richard M Nixon and Henry Cabot Lodge face a hard battle to Election Day but trusts the Republican ticket will defeat the Democrats in November. He sent a congratulatory telegram to Nixon and Lodge at the Chicago convention as Lodge won the vice presidential nomination.
Moscow sources say U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers will not be allowed American lawyers at his espionage trial opening August 17 before a military tribunal. The panel may be first instance, allowing appeals to a higher court. espionage carries a maximum death penalty.

Ohio Governor Michael DiSalle granted a two month stay of execution for Joseph L. Cosby 23 scheduled to die for the Oct 10 1958 holdup slaying of Raymond Mack in Cleveland. The delay allows counsel to seek evidence and question a key witness while another condemned youth Huston Nelson 18 awaits a decision on a separate Aug 5 1959 sentence for a drugstore shooting.
On Chicago’s West Side two gangs the Egyptian Cobras and Vice Lords clashed leaving 16 year old Richard Parks dead and 16 year old Sammy Mitchell wounded. Police seized 15 year old Robert Lewis with a .22 rifle and said retaliation sparked the shootings. Police also rounded up Vandaleers suspects after indictments for rape and robbery in Lincoln Park.
The United States sent an unmanned Project Mercury capsule aloft from Cape Canaveral but lost radio contact with the Atlas booster 65 seconds after liftoff. The launch aimed to place the capsule 110 miles up and 1,500 miles downrange to assess its heat shield during reentry. The rain soaked, wind driven ascent disappeared into low clouds immediately.
A pile of scrap wood at the Sun Glow plant triggered a fire alarm at 8 30 p m Thursday drawing city firemen. Flames seemed to issue from the roof but were found to come from the scrap pile being burned by plant employees on the west side.
Champion Paper & Fibre Co. announces Harold E. Montag of Atlanta Georgia joins its board of directors. Montag serves as board chairman of Montag Inc a stationery and school supplies maker based in Atlanta recently acquired by Champion.
Unprecedented face to face debate series likely between Republican and Democratic nominees Kennedy and Nixon. Kennedy accepted NBC invitation for a great debate at Hyannis Port Massachusetts. Nixon aides said they would pursue arrangements. CBS ABC and NBC offered peak air time but federal equal time rules may block. Senate approved changes to permit such debates. House pending.
The state Health Department mobile X ray unit ends its 1960 Hocking County tour with final sessions at Logan Courthouse today 3 to 9 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon and 5 to 8 p.m. Free X rays also planned at Laurelville Lo gan Sun Glow Furniture Har den Helden Kroger and clay products sites. Twenty eight X rays were given at South Bloomingville and 32 at Gibisonville yesterday.
The Charles F. Kettering Foundation approves a fifty thousand dollar donation to Children’s Hospital of Columbus for new diagnostic equipment in the cardiology department.
Ohio Fuel Gas Co will raise its rates by one cent per thousand cubic feet for Logan Nelsonville Athens Jackson Middleport and New Lexington effective Sept 1. The hike stems from higher costs charged by natural gas suppliers. Wellston and Hadden receive a half cent rise.
Fresno report says a two engine WWII bomber wreckage was found in Le Conte Lake Kings Canyon National Park at 11 000 feet. The log book named William T Cronin navigator of one vanished Dec 6 1943 from Hammer Field. Crew included Ellis Fish Charles Turvey Robert Hester Howard Wandpke Robert Bursey Ranger Brock located wreckage with a parachute a briefcase and a boot with remain.
In Havana Ernesto Guevara Cuba's left wing economic czar and National Bank president denounces Argentina for urging Fidel Castro to reject Soviet meddling. He spoke after midnight at the opening session of the Latin American Youth Congress.
NASA officials detailed a multibillion-dollar plan to contractors, including the Apollo three-man moon mission, the stationary Aeros satellite, the Prospector and Surveyor moon craft, and the Rebound passive communications satellites. The program centers on modular Apollo components: command center, propulsion unit, and mission unit.

Harry Jordan 23 year old magazine salesman faces additional charges after a companion was shot and killed near Newark on July 7. He posted bond on a prior assault charge in Union County and was released on 200 bond. He previously faces breaking and entering and assault with intent to rob charges.
Hyannisport Massachusetts where Senators John F Kennedy and Lyndon B Johnson meet to discuss a military spending shock plan responding to Khrushchev insults. They aim to force Republican positions on arms spending with Harriman proposing two to three billion dollars for targeted military needs. Johnson criticizes Eisenhower defense sufficiency and plans a stop in route to Truman.
A station wagon full of Pony League players and fathers collided with a car north of Springfield Ohio. Two boys, Donald Ferryman fourteen and Delmar McConkey thirteen, were killed. Five others injured including Donald Potts thirteen and Robert Krugh forty one.
Ohio's five month traffic report shows 61,573 accidents, 111,960 drivers involved, 708 deaths and 31,296 injuries. Fatal rate per 100 million car miles climbed from 3.3 to 4.0. Pedestrian fatalities reached 140 with 1,683 injuries. Peak danger occurs 3 to 6 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
