The Army, already set to induct 100,000 draftees by October 30, may stage at least one additional draft before January 1 to raise total strength toward 800,000. The Air Force and Navy await volunteer commitments to meet their combined 340,000 goal.
Ohio's Selective Service announces a revised September quota of 2850 men with 1710 additional volunteers. About 5000 young men aged 19 to 25 will undergo pre induction physical examinations as boards receive new instructions and extend exam periods.
The Army aims to reach an 800000 ground force goal but boosts September draft to 50000 and October to 50000 while total military strength nears 1927000 with Air Force 548000 and Navy 579000. President Truman extends enlistments for 12 months and foreign service tours by six months, as Congress moves to restore family allowances for enlisted personnel.
The Philip Sporn steam electric generating plant at Graham Station near Pomeroy West Virginia was dedicated for public service. The 300000 kilowatt facility with ultimate capacity near a million kilowatts aims to become the world’s largest, using coal more efficiently and serving seven-state Ohio Power Company and Appalachian Electric Power customers.

Washington July 28 J Edgar Hoover outlined seven steps for the public to help the FBI curb saboteurs during the military emergency. Key tips include calling the FBI with facts not rumors or gossip, avoiding private investigations, and staying alert to loyal workers defending internal security.
Louis, 36, announces plans to reclaim the world heavyweight title he relinquished two years ago. He began training in Indiana and aims to meet Ezzard Charles in September in New York or Chicago, saying he fights again due to a large tax assessment and hopes to become the first retired champ to regain the title. Charles, in Cincinnati, indicated cautious interest and confidence.
Senate banking committee discussed the Baruch plan for wage price controls and will vote. The panel also refined the Truman administration bill with farm exemptions and a nod to competitive enterprise. House action backed the President’s plan 20 to 1 after a failed attempt to push Baruch’s all-out control proposal.
A floor collapse at the Winn Variety Store in Zanesville injured 14 people and trapped many in the basement. The state department of industrial relations ordered an investigation led by inspector M D Parsons to determine causes and prevent a recurrence. Firefighters aided victims. two men were hospitalized with leg and throat injuries.
In Korea a massive North Korean offensive battered American forces along a 200 mile front. The First Cavalry Division faced heavy assaults near Yongdong and Hwanggan while other units fought to hold paths toward Taegu and Pusan. MacArthur and an intelligence spokesman warned the attack could decide control of the southern front.
AP reports on the Korean Fronts with 90 000 Reds launching a general offensive along a 200 mile stretch in South Korea. United forces, outnumbered four to one, counterattack to hold positions while Reds push toward Pusan. Air war sees heavy rain hindering ops but navy planes strike supply lines behind the front. Lake Success notes Russia to end the six month boycott of the UN Security Council on August 1.
